Walks and Hikes

Beautiful mature woodland with river situated in the ruins of an old Anglo-Irish family’s estate. Great for exploring. It’s hilly with a couple of climbs but it doesn’t have to be too strenuous. It can get muddy so wear suitable footwear. There are swings over the river for kids. It’s possible to walk directly from here via Cruagh cemetery but it can take a while and the road can be busy. Otherwise drive to the Hell Fire Car Park and walk back down the road to the entrance. A loop of the forest takes about an hour but smaller and longer walks are possible.

The Hell Fire Club is a ruined 18th century gentleman’s club overlooking Dublin City on Montpelier Hill. The club is rumoured to be cursed and may have been burned down by the Devil – but don’t worry because we’ve survived it every time so far. The views of the city can be spectacular on a clear day. The walk can be done at the same time as Massy’s. There are two ways to go up – straight to the top via a steep path or an easier, longer winding paved route. (45minutes/1 hour)

This climb to the top of the mountain (or large hill) we live on can be done right from the house and has great views of Dublin. Turn right out the gate, walk up the hill and then turn right after the Hazel House on Tibradden Lane. This is a steep narrow road – after some time you’ll come to a metal emergency access gate in woodland on the right-hand side – enter here and you’ll find a paved road in coniferous woods. If you follow this road, eventually you’ll pass a junction with a road joining from the right; shortly after that you’ll see some large rocks on your left hand side marking the stone path to the top of Tibradden. The top is marked by an ancient cairn. If you like you can continue to follow the sleepers for a longer walk across Ticknock and Three Rock, two of the other Dublin mountains. This walk can take 2.5-5 hours depending on how far you go! If you go far enough you can walk to the Blue Light pub and finish off with a pint…unfortunately we still haven’t figured out the best way to go but the exit is through a quarry so if you see one you’re on the right track.

This hike travels in a south-south-westerly direction across the Dublin and Wicklow uplands, then through the rolling hill country of southwest County Wicklow to finish in the small, County Carlow village of Clonegal 127 kilometres later. A combination of suburban parkland, forest trails, wild and scenic mountain landscape and finally rolling countryside offers a wonderfully varied, 10-day test of physical endurance. The hike up Tibradden forms part of the walk. Check out www.wicklowway.com

Zipit is a great ziplining centre a short distance up the road beside the Tibradden Wood Carpark. It’s about half an hour walk or a five minute drive. (zipit.ie)

A picturesque glacial lake in the mountains – the track isn’t obvious but the place for parking is visible as a private road on Google maps – don’t go down the private road but follow the walking trail to the lake. Great for swimming and a beautiful place.

If you like plants, Mount Venus Nursery is very special. Set in a walled garden, it’s less than five minutes’ walk up the road and they have lots of hardy perennials. Turn right out of the gate, past the junction and it’s on the left.

Food scene

This is a great café with indoor and outdoor dining. They also run a craft shop, pizza nights (on Fridays only) and woodworking school. Simply walk out the main gate on to the public road, turn right and straight up the hill. It’s less than ten minutes’ walk on the right-hand side. (Our tip – try the smoked brisket nachos.)

If you walk down the hill, straight at the first function and then straight-ish at the second junction you’ll come to the Merry Ploughboy. Great pub which is popular with locals serving great food. They often have live music and they frequently have traditional Irish music nights.

There are limited public transport options in the area...

The 161 bus goes from Rockbrook to Dundrum. Otherwise the best way to get around is using taxis – the most used taxi apps here are FreeNow (by far the most popular) and Uber. Taxis (and taxi prices) are strictly regulated in Ireland so using Uber is not cheaper than getting regular taxis - it is simply another way of ordering a licensed taxi. Tipping in taxis in Ireland is not essential but is common.
