Everyone visiting the island, must experience a sea safari on a traditional 'dhow' (sail boat). We recommend Safari Blue, who offer daily trips from Fumba. Advance bookings are essential!

Tourists are advised to dress modestly

Zanzibar is predominantly a Muslim country and tourists are therefore advised to dress modestly when not on the beach or within a resort environment.

Bring light, breathable clothing and flat shoes

Zanzibar is hot and humid for most of the year. Make sure to bring along clothing that is light and 'breathable' but which is also modest. Flat, comfortable shoes are also highly recommended.

Bring essential items with you

Shopping for specific essential items can be challenging and you certainly don't want to spend your vacation without them. It is recommended to bring these along with you. ie. medication, contact lenses, prescription glasses, female products, chargers, International adaptors etc

Island life is slow

In Zanzibar, life moves pole pole – Swahili for slow. Things in Zanzibar don’t always make sense, don’t always work, or can take a while. It’s important to enjoy the calm chaos and take a cue from the unhurried pace. Your smoothie might take 45 minutes to show up, but it will be delicious and worth the wait.

Safety chairs in cars are not the norm

If you are travelling with an infant or toddler and expect to travel around the island by car, you may need to arrange /bring along your own safety chair / booster seat, as these are hard to find on the island.

Bring along swim aids / floating devices for non-swimmers

Although these can be found in some places on the island, options are limited and the quality is often poor, so bring along your child's own swim aid or floating device so they can enjoy the many water activities the island has to offer.
Måder at spare penge på

Always negotiate prices

Unfortunately, as with all touristy places, locals do charge foreigners allot more than the average (resident) prices. Be sure to ask for discounts if you feel you are not being charged fairly.
Book, inden du rejser

Avoid street food

If you have a sensitive tummy, I would avoid street food, especially items containing meat or fish.

Tuk-tuks are the easiest and cheapest way to get around

Parking is limited in Stone Town, so getting around on foot or on a tuk-tuk is way more convenient! However, if you plan to head of out of town, use a registered taxi.
