Jorge Cortez traveled Mexico, exploring Monterrey, Laredo and Guadalajara in search of unique and different cuisine to bring to San Antonio. Coming upon a regional specialty that was once only familiar to vaqueros, butchers and their families, Jorge thought a dish of sizzling skirt-steak served on cast-iron plates would be popular. Although skeptical at first of the now-famous “Sizzling Fajitas”, Pedro was extremely proud to see his sons taking initiative and expanding the family business. In 1981, Jorge created and opened La Margarita Restaurant & Oyster Bar, offering Sizzling Fajitas and Seafood.

Many have tried their hand at making puffy tacos, but few if any do them better than Ray’s Drive Inn, which has a 60-year legacy to prove it. You must get in the spirit of this Westside institution, with oldies on the sound system and religious prints hanging on just about every surface.

Edgy, bohemian neighborhood lined with art galleries, coffeehouses and boutiques. Southtown originated as a part of a neighborhood revitalization project in the early 1990’s and over time grew to encompass 5 neighborhoods: King William, Collins Garden, Lavaca, Lone Star and Roosevelt. Talk about a big success. Southtown is home to First Friday and Second Saturday, the City’s longest running art-walks and “A Day In Southtown” their annual community event.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a piece of a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving four of the five Spanish frontier missions in San Antonio. The legacy and history of San Antonio began with a simple ceremony when, in 1718, Franciscans and Spanish representatives established the first mission. Within 13 years, five were located along the San Antonio River. The missions purpose was to acculturate and Christianize the native population and make them Spanish citizens. Today, visitors can retrace the footsteps of the mission Indians and friars. And, possibly, meet descendants of those first inhabitants. Four Spanish frontier missions, part of a colonization system that stretched across the Spanish Southwest in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, are preserved here. They include Missions San José, San Juan, Espada, and Concepción. The park, containing many cultural sites and natural areas, was established in 1978.

Originally a rock quarry, part of the tea garden came from a donation by George W. Brackenridge and another section from Emma Koehler. In 1915 Ray Lambert, city parks commissioner, thought it would make a nice location for a lily pond. Ultimately, it grew to become a tea garden. The latest renovations began in 2007 and cost about $1.6 million, compared with the $7,000 Lambert originally spent to open the park. It is a Registered Texas Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.
