If rural is what you love then a day trip to Knoydart is an absolute must. Once described as Scotland's last wilderness, Knoydart is accessed by a small ferry that you catch from Mallaig (Western Isles Cruises). It is 7 miles up Loch Nevis and on a good day you might see Minky whales, dolphins or porpoises. Knoydart is a tiny wee community but there is a tea room and the most remote pub in Scotland. Lots of lovely places to walk and explore. https://westernislescruises.co.uk/

This beach is an absolute gem. It is off the beaten track a little and the car park is so small that you have to get here super early to guarantee you get a space. It sadly is not wheelchair accessible but when you walk out and turn the corner to see the small isles of Eigg, Rum and Muck it will take your breath away. Note there are no public toilets here so hold it in until you get to Mallaig!

The 36 metre granite tower soars 55 metres above the rocks, and was built in 1849 using granite from the Island of Mull. It was designed by Alan Stevenson, uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson, whose family designed most of Scotland’s lighthouses over a period of 150 years. It is the only lighthouse in the world designed in an “Egyptian” style. Like all other lighthouses in Scotland, Ardnamurchan now operates automatically, but the tower remains fully functional and still plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of ships navigating the waters off Scotland’s west coast. www.ardnamurchanlighthouse.com/

The Isle of Eigg is one of the most beautiful Hebridean Islands. About five miles long by three miles wide, Eigg lies 10 miles off the Scottish West coast, South of the Isle of Skye. The island has a fascinating history, superb wildlife and a vibrant community. The island is owned by the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust who have managed it on behalf of the community since the community buyout of 1997. The Trust has responsibility for stewardship of the island, its buildings and natural heritage, and for supporting future development. The Trust has a number of subsidiary companies, including Eigg Electric, which provides the island with electricity from renewables, and Eigg Trading, which leases the pier centre An Laimhrig to the local shop, tearoom and craft shop. To get to Eigg why not take the MV Shearwater from Arisaig Marine. http://www.isleofeigg.co.uk/

The largest of the islands is Rum, often misspelt Rhum. It is said the ‘h’ was inserted by an erstwhile landowner who did not want the island to be associated with the alcoholic beverage! The name is either Old Norse, meaning ‘wide island’ or Gaelic meaning ‘isle of the ridge’. The island measures 40.4 square miles and is largely volcanic. In 1825 there were about 425 people living on the island, but the ruthless clearances saw the island cleared of its population. In 1845 it became a sporting estate, then between 1850 and 1888 it passed hands several times. In 1888 it was bought by John Bullough as a private holiday retreat and the island entered a golden age of opulence. The stud of the native Rum pony was re-introduced by John Bullough in 1888. After his father’s death, George Bullough commissioned the construction of the grand Kinloch Castle. http://www.isleofrum.co.uk/

Situated in the shelter of Glenachulish and only three miles from Glencoe and twelve miles from Fort William, Dragon's Tooth is one of the Highlands' newest courses. Designed by respected course architect Robin Hiseman, this nine-hole layout is a wonderful example of a golf course taking advantage of the natural contours of the land. A number of holes provide an interesting challenge, including the par three second, where your tee shot needs great accuracy to stay on the putting surface. The family-run clubhouse is a fitting place for you and your golfing partners to unwind after a rewarding day's golf. www.dragonstoothgolfclub.co.uk

Fort William Golf Club sits right at the foot of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. An 18 hole heathland course with a fine mix of challenging and varied holes this layout was constructed in 1975 and featured a major overhaul in 1995. Those improvements saw the playability of the course greatly enhanced without losing its appeal to beginners and more experienced players. The 125-yard par-three, 6th is the signature hole. Here, you must negotiate the Highland burn and trees that surround the wide green. Leave it short and you're likely to cause serious damage to your card. http://fortwilliamgolfclub.com/
