Historic Buffalo

The heart of Buffalo, this historic Hotel, holds a trove of historic artifacts and stories. Built in 1908 on the original site of Charles Buell’s log structure that was destroyed by fire, the lobby is where Owen Wister sat writing character sketches of frontiersman as they came through the hotel. He used these in his monumental novel The Virginian. Be sure to see the archival photographs in the photo gallery of such guests as Ernest Hemingway. The Tea room, whose back bar on the west wall is the original to the 1882 clapboard annex to the log hotel. This is where the ladies and children would gather while the men folk would gather in the saloon catching up on the latest happenings . A lady would never have entered a saloon prior to prohibition. The saloon sports twenty-six bullet holes, five which are still visible. It truly was the Wild West! The stately back bar which was built in Glasgow, Scotland is the original as well as the piano and green felt poker table. Although not available to visitors a Prohibition Saloon lies beneath the floor of the Saloon. Where the candy shop occupies space, was the original barbershop which was in use until about twenty years ago. The Virginian. One of Buffalo’s few African Americans shined shoes here for over thirty years. He was so well respected, the entire business district shut down for his funeral. The bath house, the small area of the Occidental Art Gallery was the bath house. It was used both by men and women. Towns people often made appointments for a shave, haircut and bath and of course it was used by hotel guests, From the saloon, enter The Virginian restaurant. The first dining room was a mercantile (general store). The next rooms were The Stockman’s Bank. At the far end of the hotel where Lolly’s bakery exists you will find the original bank vault.

This is a beautiful museum in , converted from an original Carnegie library. This truly is a must see. Named for the pharmacist Jim Gatchell who befriended the Sioux and traded artifacts for medicine, his collection was saved and donated to begin a small museum. The museum has evolved from small-town display cases to an interactive treasure. This museum not only gives a historic overview of the area, but offers unique indigenous artifacts that are regularly blessed in a ceremony by the Lakota Sioux. The gift store has an exquisite selection of jewelry, souvenir t-shirts, a variety of souvenirs and a vast collection of regional historical books.

Although not the original famous cinder block structure that once sat creek-side, this Busy Bee is well worth the visit. Dine where the legendary Walt Longmire regularly takes his meals in the Longmire series by Craig Johnson.
