BIG DAY OUT: HOW TO SPEND A DAY AT TALLEBUDGERA CREEK Dominica Czaczka | February 2020 IT HAS BEEN THE PLACE LOCALS GO FOR OUR DAY OUT SINCE WE CAN REMEMBER, IT ALSO TOOK THE CROWN OF BEST SWIMMING SPOT IN AUSTRALIA FOR 2019. For the uninitiated, Tallebudgera Creek is a slice of heaven situated between Burleigh Heads and Palm Beach, just off the Gold Coast Highway. With a backdrop of Burleigh headland, the soft white sand and sparking water, it is like a siren’s call on a hot summer’s day. Perfect spot for Stand Up Paddleboarding SUNRISE SUP Want the best seat in town to watch the sunrise? Head down to Tallebudgera Creek at dawn for golden hour and watch the sun come up over the horizon from the water. Stand-up paddle boarding is the unofficial pastime of choice for Southern Gold Coasters, so make like a local and test out your balance with a SUP session. CAFFEINE FIX Wash off your board and head to Custard Canteen for a coffee and a buttery, crisp flaky crust filled with sweet warm goodness, that’s right – the Portuguese custard tart, get it my belly! Brunch is served all day, opening hours are 6.30am – 2pm daily. SWIM Water calling your name? It’s time to take Australia’s best swimming spot for a road test and dive in for a dip. Splash around in the shallows, take along some inflatables for a spin or simply float along as you admire the stunning view of Burleigh headland. The main strip of beach is patrolled, so you’ll feel at ease swimming between the flags under the watchful eyes of the lifeguards and lifesavers. PICNIC AND PLAY Ready to towel off and satisfy your grumbling belly? Pull up a patch of grass and settle in for a picnic. With BBQ facilities, picnic shelters and tables, you’ll be able to enjoy a lazy lunch as the kids play on the nearby playground. Didn’t pack lunch? No worries, nearby Club Talle have you covered with a quintessential surf club lunch. TOSS THE LINE IN It comes as no surprise local fishermen are also hooked on Tallebudgera Creek – after all, the name is ancient Indigenous dialect for ‘good fish’. Cruise out on your tinny or simply set up on the shore. Fishing tips straight from the trout’s mouth: Mangrove jacks are taken at night on live whiting or mullet. Loads of flathead, bream and whiting are found throughout the river system. Plenty of yabbies can be pumped from the low tide flats downstream from the Pacific Motorway bridge. These are dynamite bait for just about anything in the creek! The upper reaches (between Pacific Motorway bridge and Tallebudgera Connection Road) of the creek are abound with the likes of bream, trevally, small barracuda and mangrove jacks as well as big whiting. Even if the fish aren’t biting, there is plenty to see. Birdlife is prolific along the creek banks and if you’re lucky you may spot White-bellied Sea Eagles, Osprey, Sacred Kingfisher or Rainbow Bee-eater to name a few.
