Places we eat and drink and shop ourselves. opening days and hours vary so ring to check and book. Mention us when you do (booking is always a good idea, especially for Crofters, IV10 and Sutor Creek)!
This is ten minutes walk from the Bolthole up a gentle hill on the village High Street in Fortrose (where you will also find the friendly Union Tavern pub, the Anderson pub with its whisky bar, the cheerful little Fortrose cafe, open daytimes only, plus the local chippy and Co-op shop) is our nearest local eatery. Quite chic but also cosy, interesting food made with local produce. Woodburner oven so good pizza. Try the Hangar Steak with Marmite Butter! Some deli produce for a classy picnic too. Wear mask to access your table please. indoor and outdoor seating.

Gorgeous informal seaside restaurant with a hearty menu and lovely locally-sourced food, including seafood and a great fish and chips. Open kitchen - always a good sign. Pip and I had our wedding reception here on 31st December 2019! Book - can get busy.

This historic pub is now a 'restaurant with rooms' providing decent burgers and pub grub with a good selection of whiskies and beers. Can get busy so book a table if you want to eat. Usually cash only. Friendly local staff.

This is the real deal - an authentic Highland pub which serves drink, not food. The locals drink here. Kind and friendly staff - they once came to the rescue of two guests whose car died on them - found a mechanic and drove them back to their vehicle, it was repaired within 24h.

Unlikely though this may sound, Slaughterhouse coffee in Cromarty, roasted in the shed next door, is the best in the Highlands. Their nibbles are nae bad either!

There are two Cromarty Bakery outlets - one at the bakery itself in Cromarty and the other on Fortrose High Street. Hot pies, pasties, sausage rolls and quiches. Try the hot mutton pie on a cold day. Take home some cheese oatcakes and cinnamon shortbread. Pip likes the custard tart but Vee prefers a nice cruffin. She only serves Cromarty Bakery bread for Bolthole breakfasts.

Philip used to be the manager here. Community-run, quiet, friendly, great soup, wonderful baking and best of all right on the beach. Indoor and outdoor tables. Not open in evenings.
