Palate Pleasures - Food Scene

Port is a great place to have a great meal even if it’s not known as typical “foodie” destination. There is an increasingly exciting range of new eating venues opening to cater to discerning palettes. No matter what they might be - gluten free, plant based and other dietary requirements are surprisingly well catered for. The Chefs Hatted restaurant, The Stunned Mullet is the best example. But is certainly not the only great place to eat in town though. Whalebone Wharf on the River front is a beautiful location for a wonderful lunch or dinner and Bills Fishhouse and Bar, 2444 and the new Deux Garden restaurant located at Cassegrain Winery, are other great more up market dining options too. For light bites, breakfasts and lunch you can’t go past Bandwagon Cafe, Banks Cafe, or Social grounds. River mark cafe near the airport, on the river too is another great option. If you’re an early bird and love to go for a walk, but need a drop of that “magic elixir” as a kick start - the Sandbox directly on Flynn’s Beach, Roam on Pacific Drive just behind Flynn's, Salty Crew Kiosk on Town Beach, Coast on Lighthouse Beach or Little Shack on the foreshore are great starting points. Casualties cafe in town do a great Bacon and Egg roll - amongst other things. For those that enjoy the “fruit of the vine", Port boasts a couple of vineyards right on your door step... Little Fish Cafe Restaurant and Cassegrain Wines are both great places to dine and drink. For a pre dinner aperitif, or just a drink you can't go past Bar Florian, Florence Jones or Zebu in town. For something more casual Hello Sailor or The Beach House is a great place to go and if the weather is great catch a beautiful Port sunset too! For great Patisseries Bittersweet or Cocoa are worth a visit. Without doubt best pizza in town is minutes away from the front door at Enzo’s at Flynn’s Beach. People come from all over to eat in or take away Remember in certainly peak periods and weekends booking is sometimes essential for many of the listed venues including bars and cafes to secure a place. Enjoy and Bon appétit!

It opens at 0630 everyday and closes Thursday to Sunday at 2100 - making it the only place in town where you can get a coffee after about 2pm! Great casual dining, focusing on best in season. Good juices and a nice chilled vibe make it a great place to stop by at anytime

Sightseeing

The Pacific Ocean is on Port's door step. This means whether you seek surf or solitude you can find beach that is just right for you. Town Beach and Flynn's would have to be the most popular, but dog friendly Nobby's beach and Shelly's beach get their fair share of devotees too! The long expanse of coastline that is Lighthouse beach to the south of Port, is spectacular! All beaches are connected via the beautiful Coastal Walk, that can be accessed easily from various points. It’s a great way to discover the various beaches and coves and get some exercise whilst you are at it! Both Nobby’s and Shelly beaches are just minutes walking from the front door of the town house. The historical Tacking Point Lighthouse - the 3rd oldest in the country - is a wonderful place to visit and a great place to witness spectacular sunsets and sometimes even see the migrating whales and dolphins depending on the season. It has magnificent views overlooking Lighthouse Beach. One of Port's big draw cards is the volunteer run Koala Hospital, about 10-15 min walk from the town house. Its great place to get up close to this iconic marsupial. Quite often in the vicinity of the house, you can see a Koala in the trees too. There are quite a few spots just out of town itself - but with in the confines - like near the airport or the golf course, where you can easily see kangaroos. Further out of town, you can explore the regions wonderful nature reserves and national parks. Places like Comboyne and the Boorganna Nature Reserve to the west, are about 75 mins away by car or Crowdy Bay National Park is bit further in distance and time to the south of Port, but are all easy to access and worth the effort to experience nature at her finest and enjoy the pure fresh air of the great outdoors of the Mid North Coast.
