Places to Visit
The 1,200-acre Dartington Hall estate is an award-winning destination in Devon which sits between Dartmoor National Park and the English Riviera coast.
From woodland walks and riverside trails to cafés, restaurants and shops, there is plenty to explore. They also host a year-round programme of art and craft activities, theatre, music and dance events as well as a wide selection of films at the celebrated independent Barn Cinema.
As a centre for learning for almost a century they have attracted a variety of leading artists and thinkers including potter Bernard Leach, composer Igor Stravinsky, cellist Jacqueline du Pre, musician Ravi Shankar, playwright Bernard Shaw and environmental activist Vandana Shiva.
The estate is home to the Dartington Hall Trust – an educational charity that supports learning in ecology, the arts, social enterprise and within the wider community. Their commercial activities support their charitable purpose.

It came into being in 2006, when Benjamin Mee and his family came across Dartmoor Wildlife Park (locally known as Sparkwell Wildlife Park): a privately owned, dilapidated exotic animal collection with a poor reputation and in terrible financial difficulty. Rather than running a mile, the Mee family were struck by the fact that if the right purchaser couldn’t be found, property developers would move in, and the vast majority of the animals would be destroyed.
Led by Benjamin, the family gathered all their resources, bought the zoo, saved the animals, and then began the year-long struggle to get the zoo ready to re-open which it finally did in July 2007 with new ideology, and under the new name of Dartmoor Zoological Park.
Benjamin’s story was documented in his book “We Bought A Zoo”, which was also released as a Hollywood movie of the same title in 2011, starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson.

You can’t have a seaside holiday without a good beach, but you need to be sure that they’re safe, relaxing and clean – especially if you’re taking toddlers with you. South Devon’s got great beaches that are perfect for proper bucket and spade holidays, and many of them are award winners for cleanliness and safety. Bantham beach is one of the best in the area and ticks all right the boxes if you want a typical English seaside holiday.

This crackingly good beach is part of the designated South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s also won awards from the Marine Conservation Society and the coveted Blue Flag, so you know it’s clean. You can see Bigbury Bay and Burgh Island from the beach - a couple of interesting locations that are well worth a visit. You can get to Burgh Island by taking a ride on the famous ‘sea-tractor’, which the kids will love. Bantham is shallow and sandy so it’s great for families with kids who want to do a little swimming or paddling, and to keep anxious parents’ minds at rest there are lifeguards on duty from May to September. At low tide, you’ll find loads of shallow pools that warm up quickly in the sun and are perfect for crab hunting.
Surfing Trips
But there’s more to Bantham beach than just sun, sand and ice cream. It’s also one of the best surfing beaches in South Devon. The beach has got mellow waves for beginners (known in surf-speak as ‘ankle slappers’), while the mouth of the River Avon fires out enough rips and breaks to test even the most radical hot-doggers.
Once you’ve had enough of the waves there’s a pub nearby serving great beer and home-cooked meals. If you want to stay near the beach there are plenty of great B&Bs in the local village. The beach is well served with its own facilities, including a beach shop where you can buy all those little essentials. While dogs are not allowed on the beach between May and September they are allowed on the Estuary all year round, which you can get to at low tide.

Whether you wish to enjoy a long cycle ride and bird watching along one of the river banks, take a short walk with the kids along the rugged and dramatic coastline or just savour the views of the Devonshire countryside as you amble through the lanes to one of the many quaint village pubs, this part of the region has plenty on offer for those of all ages to enjoy.
There are over 40 stunning walks across South Devon AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) ranging in length from 2 to 12 miles. Their website has an Interactive Map where walks can be downloaded.

Enjoy the beauty of the Jurassic Coastline in Devon, miles of breathtaking coastal paths, stunning views and historic landmarks.
The Jurassic Coast in Devon runs from Exmouth to Lyme Regis in Dorset and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its outstanding historical significance. This unspoilt stretch of coastline reveals a unique geological portrait of 185 million years of the Earth’s history sequentially exposed in dramatic cliffs, secluded caves, coastal stacks and barrier beaches. The tilt of the rocks creates a ‘walk through time’ that includes the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods, and the whole site is of tremendous aesthetic, educational and research importance.
Exmouth marks the start of the Jurassic Coast and is marked by a 5 metre Geo-needle at Orcombe Point. The coastline changes as you walk along the timeline of the Jurassic Coast – at Exmouth you can see the Triassic Rock – rich and red with unique stacks at Ladram Bay.
To the east of Sidmouth, the Cretaceous upper layer known as Salcombe Stone emerges, while at the village of Beer, the veins of gypsum can be seen, and the soft chalk cliffs dominate the landscape.
Walk the Jurassic Coast
There is no better view than the Jurassic coast from the cliff tops – and walking is the perfect way to do so. The Devon Jurassic Coastline also forms part of the South West Coast Path, with hundreds of miles of footpaths to be explored and enjoyed. The South West Coast Path has a 7 day walking itinerary where you can explore the beautiful coastal villages and beaches along the way.

Fossil Hunting on the Jurassic Coast
One of the best things about the Jurassic Coast is the plethora of fossils that have been discovered on the beaches and cliffs. Fossil hunting is a great pastime for adults and kids alike – however making sure you are safe whilst fossil hunting is of upmost importance.
Only collect loose fossils you find amongst the sand and rocks – never pick at the cliffs. Ensure you check the tide times, and stay away from the cliff face. Please abide by the Code of Conduct. In particular, do not dig into the cliffs or beach, observe local signs, only take what you need and be safe!

In spring there are colourful bulbs, flowering camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias and the best views over the River Dart through bare branches. Many interesting and tender plants grow here and the walled gardens contain a restored peach house and vinery.
A visit to Greenway isn't complete without seeing the Boathouse, scene of the crime in Dead Man’s Folly.

Ben’s Wine & Tapas is all about the things we want to eat and drink. We hope you do too! We’ve always taken wine seriously but in a farm shop it’s hard to show off our full credentials.
There’s so much great wine out there – new, exciting wines from small producers around the world at fair prices that represent real value. The quality of what you get in your bottle is an exponential leap from supermarket entry-level wine, but once you get to a certain point it seems you pay extra for a name and not much else. So we’re concentrating on mid-range, £8-£15 wines because that’s where the value is.
Wine is for sale to take home or you can pay £6 corkage charge to drink in, so you’ll get a fantastic bottle of wine for the price of a few pints in the pub. Most of our wine is from grower/winemakers, so it’s a true farm product. As much as possible, we buy straight from the producer so though not local in geographic terms, in spirit and ethos it certainly is.
When we say tapas, we mean small plates of tasty, simple food – as in a traditional tapas bar with no pretensions to be a restaurant – mainly Spanish themed, with North African, Mexican, Middle Eastern and best of British influences. There are local, seasonal and dietary variations and the sourcing is the same as the farm shop – mainly organic ingredients but most recipes won’t be certified. Son Harry, who may be a familiar face to farm shop customers, is in charge. It probably should be Harry’s Bar but, given that the reason for the name change from Riverford Farm Shops to Ben’s Farm Shops was to eliminate confusion, we thought we’d go with Ben’s.

50 High StBen’s Wine & Tapas is all about the things we want to eat and drink. We hope you do too! We’ve always taken wine seriously but in a farm shop it’s hard to show off our full credentials.
There’s so much great wine out there – new, exciting wines from small producers around the world at fair prices that represent real value. The quality of what you get in your bottle is an exponential leap from supermarket entry-level wine, but once you get to a certain point it seems you pay extra for a name and not much else. So we’re concentrating on mid-range, £8-£15 wines because that’s where the value is.
Wine is for sale to take home or you can pay £6 corkage charge to drink in, so you’ll get a fantastic bottle of wine for the price of a few pints in the pub. Most of our wine is from grower/winemakers, so it’s a true farm product. As much as possible, we buy straight from the producer so though not local in geographic terms, in spirit and ethos it certainly is.
When we say tapas, we mean small plates of tasty, simple food – as in a traditional tapas bar with no pretensions to be a restaurant – mainly Spanish themed, with North African, Mexican, Middle Eastern and best of British influences. There are local, seasonal and dietary variations and the sourcing is the same as the farm shop – mainly organic ingredients but most recipes won’t be certified.
