Hiking Trail

Ptarmagin Trail: This trailhead is on the Old Glenn Highway 1.7 miles from the cabin, just south of the Vitus gas station in Chugiak. The trail begins nicely and then becomes a challenging vertical trail. The beginning of the trail is through trees, but it eventually comes out in open. You can traverse over to the back of Mt. Baldy in ER or head up to . The traverse is about 8 miles and there is a section in the middle without a trail. Be sure to have a map with you so you don't get lost. As with all hiking in Alaska, I highly recommend you take bear spray (provided in the cabin) and make lots of noise as you hike no matter where you go.

Mt. Baldy: This is the most popular hike in Eagle River. The trailhead is up Skyline Dr to Golden Eagle Dr. Drive to the very end and there is parking at the trailhead. Even if you don't want to hike, the view from the parking lot is worth the drive. If you want to go up to the top of the mountain, head straight up the hill. The trail zigzags up the face of Mt. Baldy and once you reach the top you may be tempted to continue across the ridges to Blacktail & Vista peaks. This is a very popular trail. There are always people to share the trail and so if hiking alone is not your favorite, Baldy is a good choice.

The Peter's Creek trailhead is one of the closest hiking trails to the cabin. Once you arrive, there is only on-street parking for a limited number of cars. Try to park with your car as far off the road as possible. There are 2 options once you start on the trail. One fork goes up to the top of Bear Mountain and the other stays in the trees and heads back Peters Creek Valley with an option to climb Mt. Eklutna. The trail up to Bear Mtn is very steep with amazing views at the top. Well worth the effort. The trail meandering back the Peter's Creek valley is lovely and an easy hike in all weather. It is also fun to bike back this trail. As with all hiking in Alaska, I highly recommend you take bear spray (provided in the cabin) and make lots of noise as you hike no matter where you go.

Thunderbird Falls is accessed just north of Peter's Creek at the Thunderbird Falls exit. The Eagle & Symphony Lake trail is about 10 miles round trip. The trailhead is located up Hiland Valley. The majority of the hike is rather level, but beware of the boulder field just before the lakes. Many dogs, especially small ones, have a hard time hopping the boulders. Take care as it's a long walk back with a sprained ankle. The lakes are gorgeous and well worth the trip. As with all hiking in Alaska, I highly recommend you take bear spray (provided in the cabin) and make lots of noise as you hike no matter where you go.

Eagle River Nature Center: Drive back Eagle River Road to the end, about 12 miles. This is the start of the original Iditarod trail and it goes all the way over the mountains to Girdwood. It is relatively flat and well maintained with benches and informational boards for the first 1-2 miles. There are also cool decks you can walk over creeks on. There is a 5$ charge (cash only) to park here. The Nature Center has lots of neat, kid friendly informational exhibits. There are also regular planned events at the Nature Center including guided hikes. The drive back is worth it! Lovely in every way.
