Food Scene near the Garden room
West Berkeley offers a ton of restaurants and bars. Due to the pandemic, limited inside seating is offered at this time, but most have comfortable outdoor seating as well. Most restaurants here are walkable from 1.5 - 2.5 blocks. Enjoy!

Can get prepared foods too - burrito bar, Asian rice bowls, deli sandwiches and salads, hot soups - to take home or eat in the cafe. Biggest selection of Acme bread! Cafe also makes burgers and hot food. Smoothie and coffee bar as well!
20 minute walk, but a 5 minute car ride with plenty of parking.

Neighborhoods
In addition to the food selection at Dwight Way and San Pablo Aves, another foodie area is located at San Pablo and University, just north of here.
Diverse group of stores from Middle eastern and Mexican markets (with hot food as well) to Spanish Tapas, German and delicious Italian food. About a 10 - 15 minute walk through the neighborhood to this area. Not the swankiest area of town - so be careful later in the evening.
University Avenue & San Pablo Avenue

Sports and open space to play
3 blocks south of my house (walk south on Mabel street). Tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts (watch kids play unicycle basketball!) brand new fancy playground equipment( toddler playground as well), community center and open space for hanging out and walking.

I always recommend taking the bus to UC Berkeley because parking is very expensive near campus.
There are 2 buses to UC Berkeley and downtown Berkeley within 1.5 blocks of the garden room. AC transit lines 88 and the 36.
Also, there is a bus to downtown SF, during commute hours, that stops in front of the Homemade Cafe.

Bus to San Francisco - AC transbay bus - J - commute hrs only!
The 'J' bus to San Francisco (Salesforce transit Center) stops in front of the Homemade Cafe (Dwight and Sacramento) from 5:50 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.
Coming back to Berkeley - the bus runs between 4:25 and 7:30 from the transit Center to Berkeley. After 7:30 p.m. you can take the 'F' line back to downtown Berkeley, or take BART transit.

Berkeley is not a paradise. Always be aware of your surroundings, and be extra vigilant at night.
There has been reports of assaults and burglaries near campus, and car break-ins all over Berkeley. Do not keep your things in your car at night, and be vigilant walking by yourself. Put your phone away and walk in groups if possible.
