This is a spectacular playground like nothing you've probably seen before. Amazing ropes, logs, rocks in incredible formations, including a thing that looks like a giant played pick up sticks with telegraph poles. Beautiful natural materials. Something for every age, even big old kids.

The Melbourne Zoo has all the critters, music, food. The zoo has recently rebranded itself as a conservation organisation working to fight extinction, which is a stronger purpose than just gawking at animals.

Rathdowne St Carlton North has a great little village atmosphere. Check out Gerald's Bar for wine and food with a personal touch. Clay Organic grocery has the best fruit n veg in the area. Skinner and Hackett is the fanciest butcher you'll ever see. There's a library, a park, a newsagency. Yumbo's icecream is the best. Only locals seem to hang out here, so you can avoid the crowds.

Food scene

Delish fancy eggs, great coffee, special pastries. It's right on the bike path. Cafes like this made the media declare the youth of Melbourne couldn't afford to buy houses because they spend too much on smashed avocado. Open for breakfast and lunch. There's a little playground for the little ones.

Don't queue up at Pidapipo in Lygon Street. Local tip – Yumbo's is better! The icecream is yum. The service is friendly. It's been serving North Carlton for decades.

Melbourne - 4 seasons in one day

Melbourne is famous for changeable weather. It can be super hot or cold and drizzly, often in the same day! Pack layers. Throw in your singlet AND your beanie and you should be sweet! Winter is cold enough that you wish you packed another jumper, but not so cold you actually buy a proper coat. Summer can be overwhelmingly hot, but a cool change will bring relief.
