The Carrara Marble mines have been in existence for centuries. Michelangelo would travel here from Florence to choose his marble, which would be then cut. The area is full of small sculpture schools hidden in the hills and marble can be seen everywhere. The mines themselves are extraordinary, like huge skyscrapers of gleaming white marble, high above the tuscan coastline. Guides available.
