Things to do

A nice excursion for picnic and a nice walk from the cottage.

Take a nice walk up to the church from you cottage. There you have nice views over the fields and the chuch us well worth a visit.
Fullestad church is one of the very few stone churches in the area from the later part of the Middle Ages. It is beutifull to go there with a picnic and sit on the stone bench in front of the chuch and look over the fields in front if you. The original church was built between the 11th and 1300s. The walls are of gray stone and about 1.5 meters thick. The rectangular plank shape is, like the steep gables, typical of Gothic. The unpainted facades with their coarse masonry of gray stone are largely the result of an extensive restoration 1909-1913, led by the renowned national romantic architect Torben Grut, who sought an old-fashioned expression. The church had then been more or less deserted since 1837 when the parishes Bergstena, Fullestad and Lena built a new common church. The medieval church's salvation was that it was purchased by Captain Bauer at Lagmalmsholm to become a cereal warehouse. Later he donated the church back to the congregation on condition that it was well taken care of. The church room has a fully molded interior designed by Grut with features of the Renaissance and Baroque. The only older interior decoration that has been preserved is the lantern chest painted with biblical figures by the skilled Borå painter Detleff Ross 1752. Next to the towerless church stands a small belfry and next to it a walled ladder gate which is the entrance to the cemetery. • In 1692 the church was destroyed by a fiery fire and for eight years only later everything was restored • The altarpiece and murals are from 1752 • During the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century, the church was used as a cereal warehouse and was inaugurated for religious service only in 1913. • The church bell donated by Captain Bauer is cast in Jönköping in 1841 and bears the following inscription: When my sound hears your ear hurry to the gentleman's house. Where you hear the Lord's truth and is built up by its light. So celebrate the holidays that you may receive the Lord's grace.
