Neighbourhoods

There are lots of great walks, beaches and other places to visit in the area. Beesands is a half mile walk from the house but it’s a steep climb back up! The lane is narrow and can be busy with traffic in the summer but you can walk the last few hundred yards through the fields (gate on the left where the road turns sharply right). Beesands has a shingle beach and is never very busy although parking can be difficult in the summer. This year (2022) there has been parking available in a field with a short walk down to the beach. Britannia Fish Restaurant (great take away Fish and Chips) is on the beach and there is also a very good pub - The Cricket Inn Beeands is on the South West Coast Path. If you turn right you will come to Hallsands, The Lost Village and Start Point Lighthouse. Walking left will take you to Torcorss and Slapton Sands. Start Point Lighthouse is worth a visit - usually open in the school holidays. You can park and walk down to Mattiscombe beach - another steep walk back up. If you walk from here around the coast path towards the lighthouse you will usually see seals on the rocks. The best local sandy beach is Lanacombe, a great shallow beach for children. There is no beach at high tide so time your visit as the tide is going out and go early as there is very limited parking - but it is right next to the beach. Lanacombe takes a bit of finding but is well worth it. Slightly further afield is Mill Bay, another bigger sandy beach on our side of the Kingsbridge estuary. It’s very sheltered and great for children. You can get the pedestrian ferry across to Salcombe from here. Again go early as the National Trust Car Park gets very busy - but there is still beach if the tide is in! To avoid the stress of parking you can leave the car in East Portlemouth and walk down the very steep steps to the beach. There is a nice circular walk from Mill Bay round the South West Coast Path to Gara Rock (nice restaurant) and back via the inland path. East Prawl is worth a visit - Pigs Nose Pub and Pizza Me. Stokeley Farm Shop has a nice Cafe (and bar in the evening). The nearest supermarkets are Tesco and Morrisons in Kingsbridge. We like Maha- Bharat Indian Restaurant but there are lots of places to eat or get a take away. There are several National Trust Properties in the area: Overbecks has lovely gardens overlooking Salcombe and the estuary. Coleton Fishacre is on the other side of the Dartmouth estuary - go across on the car ferry. Greenway (Agatha Christie’s holiday home) is a nice boat trip from Dartmouth or a very short pedestrian ferry from Dittisham. Lots to see and do. Enjoy your stay. You are welcome to look at the Ordnance Survey maps in the drawer in the kitchen but please do not remove them from the house.
