You will get a fantastic view of Lake Te Anau, surrounding mountains and the township. It's a full day to walk to the hut and back, but you can shorten the walking time by taking a water taxi across the lake.

This is the only place where you can see a takahe, the bird once considered extinct, but was re-discovered in the mountains on the other side of Lake Te Anau. It's a nice45min walk from town or 1/2hr from DOC office.
