The Berkeley Rose Garden is a special place. As its name suggests, its a rose garden with just about every kind of rose you can think of - and many more you would never think of! It's nestled in the hills of Berkeley, next to some community tennis courts. In nice weather, there are sometimes concerts. Being a local favorite spot, we've seen it swarmed with high schoolers before a big dance or prom, dressed in their Sunday best for photographs. On clear days, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge clear across the Bay. Alcatraz sits in the thick of it, and, of course, San Francisco. It's popular for sunsets, when there are fireworks (when we're not socked in fog), and, with a spectacular park (with concrete slide!) across the street (or through the tunnel below), for families and picnickers alike. Everyone is welcome! Plus, it's about a 10-minute walk up the hill from our home.

This is where that coffee roasting dream began! The original Peet's Coffee on the corner of Walnut and Vine. It's still a popular joint to get your caffeine fix.

Don't let the line down the block discourage you - it'll move quick as folks work it up to the front to get the pizza of the day. Always vegetarian and on a sourdough crust, their combinations might puzzle you - at least until the first bite when it all just magically comes together. Now, this is important: Get the Papi Chulo green sauce! It packs a little punch, but is also right and flavorful, a delicious complement to the pizza. Unfortunately, Cheeseboard Pizza is closed Sundays and Mondays. But, if you're here any other day of the week, you better grab at least a half pizza!

I lived in Madrid while getting my master's degree, and quickly fell in love with the way of life. It seemed like the entire city would come alive in the Spring, wander around, enjoy tapas and cañas. Wine, of course, was on tap (sometime a tinto de verano - wine mixed with grapefruit soda), or some sherry. Bar Cesar is my throwback to Spain. Just down the hill from our home, they scratch my itch for Spanish cuisine. Grab a glass of sherry, an order of pimiento de padron, and go from there!

Downtown Berkeley BART

Nestled in nearby downtown Berkeley is the closest Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station. It's about a 15-minute walk (well, downhill, so maybe a little less). Your smart phone's map will guide you right to it. Alternatively, it's a short few-minute ride share ride. We're also near a few buses that travel through - but, honestly, after it's all said and done with figuring out the schedule and all that, the walk is faster. Maybe save that for the way back up!
