Food scene

The Derby Arms is just a minutes walk - about 75 meters from the apartment. Being a local favorite it serves multiple choices of Real Ales, food, let dogs in and there is usually live music each Saturday night. Attached to the pub is the community shop selling a variety of things, which is very handy.

The Royal Oak is a couple of minutes drive from the apartment in the village of Lindale. Locally known as the Top House it serves a selection of Real Ales and lovely food with a Specials menu which changes weekly. Sadly no dogs are allowed, but its a popular dining spot and reservations are a must.

The Hare and Hounds is in the village of Levens which is about a 3 minute drive from the apartment. The restaurant doesn't allow dogs in, but they are very welcome in the bar area where many people dine. They sell a variety of pizzas and burgers along with other dishes, are open all day and we recommend making a reservation with it being so popular.

Local Landmarks

There are numerous routes to the top of Whitbarrow Scar where the views are outstanding. On a clear day you can see long distance views of hills, fells and villages in the Lake district and to the other side there is Morecambe on the other side of the Estuary. It's an ideal dog walking area with long and short walks to do, some easy and others more testing

Visitor Attractions

The house is well worth a visit and the topiary gardens are stunning to walk around. With car parking, cafe and a shop it makes a lovely day out, especially when the weather is nice and you can wander around the gardens. I find them quite stunning.

Cartmel is a small village about 6 miles away and the Priory is an imposing building built in the 12th century from 1190. Somehow it managed to avoid Henry VIII's destructive attentions so it's beauty can be enjoyed by everyone today in the form as it was and not in ruins as so many are.

Sightseeing

Fell Foot Park is a 10 minute drive away and a popular place our previous b&b guests loved to visit with or without their dogs. A lovely place for a picnic where you can sit and watch the boats passing by and there is some lovely scenery.

Getting Close to Nature

Situated at Lakeside on the southern end of Lake Windermere it's only about 8 miles away and the aquarium, features otters, pike, char, British sharks and rays. You can watch the ants building their hills. See the water voles and harvest mice on their nocturnal activities and the under water tunnel featuring giant carp and diving ducks. Daily talks, children’s quiz trails and special event days available. Coffee shop overlooks Lake Windermere. This is a wonderful place to visit especially on damp days because most of it is under cover.

Travelling by bus?

There are 2 bus stops on the junction about a couple of minutes walk from the apartment. One takes you to Kendal and up into the Lake District, and the other takes you to Grange-over-Sands, Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness. These allow guests without their own transport to get around as many did while we were a bed and breakfast prior to becoming the self catering apartment.

Travelling by car is by the easiest way of getting around.

With the apartment being near the A590 there are no narrow winding roads to drive along to get to us and there is easy access to a really good road network for visiting all areas of the Lake District, South Lakes Furness Peninsular, Northern Lancashire and into Yorkshire
