Sightseeing

Formerly the seaside home of inventor Otto Overbeck, the gardens and house are perched high on the cliffs above Salcombe. It is home to an unusual collection of rare and tropical plants, creating a dramatic display of hot colours and exotic scents. It is the perfect day out for keen gardeners seeking inspiration. The museum houses some of Overbeck's art and natural history collection together with a display of items relating to the maritime history of the area.

This is one of our favourite beaches along the A379 heading towards Dartmouth. It’s a great spot for a swim as its turquoise waters are clean (it is a Blue Flag beach) and usually calm. It’s also possible to hire kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. On the beach, with views of the bay, is the Venus Café & Bar. There are lifeguards on duty in July and August. You have to pay to park.

This is a lovely beach near to East Portlemouth which has a view of Salcombe across the estuary. There’s a National Trust car park at Mill Bay, which is free for members. It is open from 8am until 11pm until 8am. On sunny days and in summer months, the car park can be full from 11am. Otherwise you can reach Mill Bay along the South West Coast Path or park in Salcombe and get the passenger ferry across.

On the harbour side at Plymouth is the nation’s largest aquarium. The Atlantic Ocean tank (the deepest in the United Kingdom) is home to several species of sharks and rays.

The Dartmouth Steam Railway runs between Paignton and Kingswear (and onward to Dartmouth via foot ferry). It passes traditional seaside resorts with colourful beach huts before chugging through woodland above the River Dart. If you’re visiting Greenway, you can alight at Greenway Halt and walk to the house through woodland paths (not suitable for pushchairs). Alternatively, a shuttle bus runs from Churston Station. The South Devon Railway travels through glorious countryside from Buckfastleigh, on the edge of Dartmoor, to Totnes.

This was Agatha Christie’s holiday home (now a National Trust property) and is full of items which belonged to Christie and her family. The house is set in some of Devon’s prettiest countryside, high above the River Dart a couple of miles upstream from Dartmouth. Agatha Christie fans will recognise the boathouse as the spot where Marlene Tucker was found murdered in Dead Man’s Folly.

The Crabshell is one of the places to be seen in Kingsbridge. Situated on Embankment Road near to Jewson, it has a great location overlooking the estuary – particularly nice for a lazy summer evening. If you want to eat it is probably best to book at table, particularly in the busy summer months!

The Millbrook Inn is the award-winning pub in nearby South Pool. Known for supporting local farmers and fishing, its menu changes according to the season. We’ve enjoyed fantastic evening meals and Sunday lunches alike here. It isn’t a big place so you’ll need to book a table – you can do this by calling or using the online booking form.

The Start Bay Inn is right on the front at Torcross. Well worth a visit if you’re a fan of fish & chips!

Kingsbridge is a lovely estuarine town, with a number of independent shops on Fore Street, great places to eat, as well as two major supermarkets, a little cinema and a leisure centre. Bus services run from the Quay in the centre of the town.
