Rye - Things to see and do nearby

The coastal town of Rye is a popular holiday destination nestled between Tootgarook and Blairgowrie. Point Nepean Road is Rye's main thoroughfare, running parallel to Rye's main beach on the coast of Port Phillip. This beach offers safe sandy, family friendly beaches that are ideal for swimming and boating. There is a jetty, several boat ramps, and attractive foreshore facilities with picnic areas, shelters, playgrounds and walking tracks including part of the 28 kilometre Bay Trail that extends from Safety beach to Portsea. If you enjoy snorkelling then head for the ‘Octopus’s Garden’ at the Rye Pier. This is a 200 metre underwater trail with signage introducing you to the local underwater wildlife. During the summer, Rye's popular carnival is located beside the pier. The main concentration of shops is located east of Dundas Street and includes a hotel, eateries, a major supermarket and other retailers. Rye also has an impressive ocean beach on the Bass Strait coastline, with magnificent walks along the clifftops that form part of the 25 kilometre Coastal Walk through the magnificent Mornington Peninsula National Park that protects this beautiful yet fragile coastline. This is also ‘The Cups’ golf region, where sand dunes provide naturally contoured challenges and the sandy soils drain quickly for good year round play. The multi award winning Peninsula Hot Springs is nearby, and is Victoria’s only geo-thermal hot springs. Rye is approximately a 1 hour and 25 minute drive (100 kilometres) south of Melbourne.

As one of the many back ocean beaches that string together as part of the Mornington Peninsula National Park and day hike, this is a rugged, pristine locals beach , that is a well kept secret. It has huge crashing waves and amazing rock pools to explore when the tide is out. Note - Like many of the ocean back beaches along this stretch, it isn’t monitored and is swimming is unsafe.

Rye Pier offers beautiful underwater vistas and some of the warmest water in Port Phillip Bay. The water is approximately 6m maximum in depth. Diving at high tide with calm waters offers the best scenery. Underwater it is predominantly sandy around the pier, with small patches of sea grass and once out from the pier it is pure sand bed. Under the pier keep your eyes on the pylons for bottom feeding stingrays, seahorses, spider crabs and octopus, through to a range of fish species. There is also a trail of photographs (known as the Octopuses Garden) attached to the pylons, explaining the various marine life present. Fishing from the pier is also popular.
