The neighborhood is a walk-around friendly place with historic Grandin Theatre and the oldest organic food co-op in Roanoke. It has restaurants, coffee shop, bicycle shop, used book store, cupcake shop, ice cream and a short walk across the bridge is Black Dog Salvage. You can also get on Roanoke's Greenway for walking and bicycling at Black Dog.

Mill Mountain is a family friendly park with an overlook of the entire Roanoke, Salem, Vinton area. You can drive to it or hike to it. There are 10-miles of hiking trails, wildflower garden, overlooks, a small zoo, a playground and picnic area.

Roanoke is uniquely situated at the intersection of the Blue Ridge, Appalachia and Alleghany Mountains. The Blue Ridge Parkway can be accessed in Roanoke and is 469 meandering miles from Virginia to Georgia. The Appalachian Trail passes through the area and has some amazing hikes. Research shows that being in the outdoors reduces stress levels and raises people's level of happiness so take some time to be outdoors, whether it is in my small patch of woods or the entire forest areas I have listed here. .

Some sections are more populated than others. A 20-mile bike ride, a 3-mile walk or a 5-mile run is easily done on this greenway.

For those who like museums, Roanoke's art museums reflect a rich culture. Taubman is a work of art in the building itself as well as having changing exhibits that are thought provoking and amazing. In addition to the Taubman, Center in the Square Museums is downtown and includes: African American Culture Museum, a History of Western Virginia, Roanoke Pinball Museum, and Science Museum of Western Virginia.
Visit Eleanor D Wilson at Hollins University or Olin Hall Galleries at Roanoke College for special exhibits and permanent collections.
Include a stop at Salem Museum for additional history about the area.
