Food scene

All the best local providers of food and drink.
The Old Smithy is the closest public house to Down Barton and offers a classic country pub atmosphere. The thatched building houses a single bar, dining area and a small music venue. The food is great and the folk and music jam nights are often excellent. It's a very short stroll across the fields or via the lane to the pub.

Another great authentic, country pub with good food, great atmosphere and lovely beers. Excellent dining space and a large beer garden make this a perfect start/end point for explorations along the North Cornish Coast. Good acoustic music sessions during the holiday season too.

Probably one of the best Tea Rooms fairly close to Down Barton, Rectory Farm also do light lunches, wonderful cream teas and Cake to suit every taste. Close to the spectacular Morwenstowe Church, once home to the Rev Hawker, famous for his sermons and his beautiful, little hut which is a short, relatively flat, walk from the Rectory. Highly recommended.

Sightseeing

Things not to miss on your stay at Down Barton
The closest beach to Down Barton & owned by the National Trust (No Parking Fees apply) Welcombe Mouth is one of the gems of the North Devon Coast. Access is via an unmetalled track to the small car park and then a rough path down to the beach itself. It's within easy walking distance (Downhill all the way!) but if you are taking lot's of beach equipment we would suggest you drive. During high season we would also recommend getting there early to make sure of securing a parking space. A pebbly foreshore gives way to series of sandy strips that run down to the sea at low tide, often combining to make a large sandy area. At low tide there are numerous rock pools to explore South towards Marsland Mouth or North to secluded bays. Please check the local tide times before setting off on explorations as there is no access to the coastpath from the beaches north of Welcombe. Please also note there is no lifeguard cover at Welcombe Mouth. Late or early in the holiday season you can often spend a few hours on the beach with it completely to yourself. We have spent many happy days here.
