The Mornington Peninsula is renowned for its exceptional wine and food. There are numerous wineries with breathtaking views, many including the ocean. I adore going to wineries in the area, and I have included some of my favourites!

There are several walking tracks throughout the reserve. Native wildflowers and grass are abundant in the reserve along with 45 different species of birds. The lake is the home to a number of waterbirds and the odd Koala can sometimes be seen in the Eucalyptus trees. If you want to get to the lookout without the steep climb, I would suggest either starting the walk from Allison Street and Canadian Bay Road. Either way is a short distance to the lookout although Canadian Bay Road is nearer of the two, but you may miss some of the awesome views. GLASS BLOWING IS AN AGE OLD ART… …a craft whose traditions go back thousands of years, the techniques and tools that remain largely unchanged can be witnessed live at the studio. See the blowing room and experience the searing heat of the furnaces from the security and comfort of a light filled viewing mezzanine, where you can observe resident glass artists working with molten hot glass. A truly unique experience to witness the ancient techniques used to work hot glass and shape it with tools, adding colour, blowing air and harnessing gravity to create beautiful art glass forms. Hugh Evans is regarded as one the most exciting painters of the Australian landscape. His magical and unique lollipop logo allows him to freely explore the basic elements of colour, texture and line unfettered by the interpretation of subject matter. Hugh’s magical sense of colour combines well with his gestures of marks, circles and striations to create a spectacular yet often sublime body of work that has to be seen to be believed. Hugh encourages his visitors to actually touch his paintings textures to better understand what he is saying about his surface. Hugh’s paintings can take ‘a lot of looking at’. Something new appears every time you look at his works much like looking into the coals of a fire. His incredible spontaneity and freshness comes from experience of 50 years of painting and subject themes of 70 years of life. Hugh has developed his own ‘look’ with his distinctive style that embodies his own varied and richly patterned journey of life. Hugh also enjoys to make his way to Port Douglas in Far North Queensland to gain even more inspiration to do what he does best. Open to the public most weekends, everyday over summer and by appointment all other times – please call ahead to avoid disappointment.

History

The Peninsula has much to offer in the way of grand mansions, historic gardens, antiques and historic maritime sights. If you love taking a step back in time, here are some of the wonderful historic places to visit during your stay.
Point Nepean played a critical defence role from the 1880s through both World Wars. Closed to the public for more than 100 years, Point Nepean was also home to an historic Quarantine Station which has recently been opened to visitors. Here you can explore the tunnels, forts and gun emplacements from which the first allied shots of World War I and first Australian shots of World War II were fired. You can hire a bike to ride around Port Nepean – and it’s a great experience to do so.

The Mornington Railway runs on the Mornington Branch line, recreating the original Victorian Railways branch line operation. Trains run on the first three Sundays of every month, and some holidays, from Moorooduc to Mornington and back. On most days, steam locomotives haul lovingly restored passenger carriages. The Homestead is one of Victoria’s oldest, original existing houses, and was built on a large lease in the Port Phillip colony, Arthur’s Seat Run, comprising 33 square miles or 20,500 acres (8,296ha). The building was designed by Georgiana McCrae who was the illegitimate daughter of the 5th Duke of Gordon, a talented artist and dedicated diarist. The McCrae family were one of the first six pioneer families to establish properties on the Mornington Peninsula. The homestead has been restored back to its original features and includes many pieces of furniture, art and objects from the McCrae family to create the life of these Scottish migrants and demonstrate the type of lifestyle of pioneer settlers in the Port Phillip Colony. The Visitor’s Centre, located on the property, features two galleries, one of which is dedicated to the McCrae family and particularly to Georgiana’s art and memorabilia, and the other features incredible photography, artefacts and objects from the Burrell-Twycross family who lived at McCrae Homestead from 1851 to 1926. This place is fascinating, when you visit it you can feel what early pioneering life would really be like!
