The El Presidio Historic District is a residential neighborhood containing adobe and brick buildings in the Spanish-Mexican, Anglo-American and Eclectic architectural styles. Named for the Spanish-built Presidio de San Augustín del Tucson (1775), El Presidio is one of the nation's oldest inhabited sites. The district is on the site of a prehistoric Hohokam Indian site (c. 700-900 A.D.) and the original presidio (fort). The El Presidio Historic District reflects Tucson's development from an 18th-century walled compound to its emergence as a major 20th-century mercantile center.

My first time going here (and I live in Tucson)! There was no water when I came here the other day but I'm glad I got the opportunity to hike with friends and climb on boulders to reach this place. An ideal place to get away from the city life and enjoy the quietness for a brief moment. Bring lots of water and comfortable hiking boots since the granite is very slippery here. Make sure you arrive here very early in the morning since the desert heat is unbearable for those who are not used to a triple-digit weather.

Called the "White Dove of the Desert," San Xavier Del Bac is one of the most beautiful mission church complexes in the Southwest. The original mission was founded in 1692 by a Jesuit missionary, Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, to serve the Sobaipuri Indians (O'odham). The present church was built by the Franciscans between 1783-1797. Of Baroque design, the large stuccoed church has two bell towers, one of, which is incomplete. The church's beautiful front portal is decorated with scrolled ornaments and sculptures and virtually the entire interior is covered with elaborately painted and sculpted surfaces.

Tubac Presidio (San Ignacio de Tubac) was established in 1752 in response to the Pima Indian Rebellion, an uprising to protest forced labor in local mines and ranches. The presidio (fort) was intended to protect the various missions in the area and to quell further uprisings. Tubac is the oldest of the three Spanish presidios founded in Arizona and was once considered the official capitol of the region. Today the park and museum highlight the contributions of American Indians, Spaniards, Mexicans and Anglo-Americans to Arizona's history and development.

Since this is an active military base, it's not open to the general public except during an open house and air show. As was the case on this visit. It is your very typical air base and it was your very typical air show with civilian and largely military aircraft. Lots of static displays, plenty of personnel to answer your questions. Plenty of food and drink and port-a-potties. Access onto the base is limited, but getting into and parking was easy, although it was a bit of a hike to the viewing area. but I guess that is to be expected. All in all, a fun day.

A short trip west of downtown Tucson (follow Congress under the highway) and easily accessible from Highway 10 if driving by, Sentinel Peak Park is home to the Arizona A. In a relatively quick but spectacular ascent, you can reach near the top. Pull off parking makes taking in the views easy -- perfect for photos. A parking lot nearer the top will put you close to a couple of short trails if you want to ascend higher by foot. There are informational signs about the park's history and shaded venues to sit under and take in the views of Tucson from all sides. Access is free. Public areas are a bit trashy and need some attention.
