Fort George was originally built as part of a network of military forts - stretching from Fort-William on the West coast through to Inverness and the Moray Firth. These forts were built to project British military power deep into the highlands after the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 was put down. It is one of few remaining 'star forts' in the UK and the only one that remains an active military barracks. Conveniently it is also a tourist attraction. There are guided tours but you can also walk around inside the fort by yourself to look at all of the exhibits and buildings at your own pace. There is also an indoors museum within Ft. George dedicated to the history of the highlanders regiment.

Just over an hour away is the Lecht Ski Centre where in winter you can get ski lessons and lifts up the snowy mountains in the Eastern Cairngorms. It has slopes suitable for beginners and more advanced skiers.
