Food Scene

From this newly opened Thai snack-and-dessert companion to Khao Kang, just around the corner: Grilled jumbo shrimp with stir-fried noodles; cassava cake. You'd expect the shrimp to be charred and the noodle, fried, just before serving, but my dessert (the best of several I sampled) was freshly made, too: It was being sliced free of its baking pan even as I walked in the door.

On a block dominated by Thai restaurants, this little Mexican joint gets little attention. It got on my foodie radar, and I really liked it. The place is small, but the menu is fairly vast with slighty different twist on the usuals. Got the Deep Fried Shrimp Ceviche Guacamole, tasted fresh and creamy. The Chicken Quesadilla was big on portion and plenty of queso cheese. Price was decent for the amount of food on the plate. I also enjoyed the Horchata since it tasted more like almond rice water than just cinnamon. Definitely a good try.

Tea Cup Cafe is a small place with a big heart hiding on Woodside Avenue. A true gem of the Thai coffee shop scene in Elmhurst. I've paid visits more times than I can count on both hands, and consistently find myself ordering the iced matcha latte every single time. While you're at it, opt for the condensed milk toast or one of the numerous artisan cupcakes and macarons. The atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable, having wooden stools and small tables good for small groups or solo if you're just heading out for a quick sugar fix. During cooler days I've noticed the staff providing outdoor seating as well. If you are a foodie, I highly recommend Tea Cup Cafe! - CASH ONLY

Long considered a destination for curries, whether sour, Penang, or jungle, this standby also offers noteworthy beef-tendon soup and Chinese-style stir-fry. You’ll want to pay special attention to northern dishes like e-sarn sausage and the green-mango and papaya salads. - CARDS / CASH

Modeled after and named for Thailand’s rice-and-curry spots, this cafeteria-style joint provides no menu. Searing and sour curries are doled out from the colorful steam table and change daily — your only choice is whether you want two or three with your rice ($8.50 to $8.95). - CASH ONLY
