Coffee was apparently introduced to Austria around 1683, and the first coffee house was opened soon after. Some of the grandest ones still open today include Café Sperl, Café Pruckel and Café Landtmann, but the granddaddy of them all has to be Café Central.
Carola and I always love Café Hawelka, its understated, unique, gives you the feeling that great debates, discussions, and ideas (good and bad) have been hatched while enjoying excellent coffee! It has attracted writers, philosophers and thinkers such as Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and even Leon Trotsky.

Vienna's Imperial Palace, the Hofburg, was for centuries the seat of the Habsburgs, rulers of Austria until the end of WWI. A great deal of European history was written here, in particular by Empress Maria and, for a while, the German Emperor (today, it's the official seat of the Austrian Head of State, the Federal President). The complex is particularly interesting as its major buildings reflect more than 700 years of architectural history; nearly every Austrian ruler since 1275 ordered additions or alterations. As a result, the Hofburg shows many different architectural styles, from Gothic to Renaissance, Baroque to Rococo, and a smattering of Classicism.......

Today, it's one of Vienna's leading attractions, thrilling audiences with fabulous displays of equestrian skills in the Baroque Winter Riding School in the grounds of the Hofburg Palace, where it has been located since 1735. Tickets to performances sell quickly, so be sure to book as far in advance as possible.

The Empress Maria Teresa bought the site in 1754. It became a royal botanic garden and is now run by the University's botany department. The garden originally had regular flowerbeds but now as a more serpentine style. It also has a famous Alpine Garden.....

The original 12th-century Romanesque church was replaced by a Late Romanesque one in the 13th century, the remains of which are the massive gate and the Heathen Towers (Heidentürme). Next came reconstruction in the Gothic style in the 14th century, along with the addition of the Choir and the Chapels of St. Eligius, St Tirna, and St. Catherine, while the famous 137-meter high South Tower (Steffl) belongs to the 15th-century. Improvements and further construction followed from the 17th to 19th centuries, and the whole structure was rebuilt......
