Of these, we tend to like to go to the Foodland in Kailua (45min) as it has a nice inner store (R Field Wine Co.) that sells some more out of the ordinary and specialty items (food and wine). The store is very nice with a good selection of produce. The store also has beach towels, souvenirs and such. Longs Drugstore is a large store (https://www.cvs.com/content/longs) and located throughout the island. Its parent company is CVS on the mainland. It is a great place to buy sundries and most things you need. We shop there regularly for most non-perishable grocery items and at their pharmacy. They have most of what you need. They often also sell inexpensive snorkels, boogie boards that are for sale there. Plus, they also have great sale prices for items you may wish to bring home as gifts such as macadamia nuts (chocolate covered or not), teas, coffees, and so forth. Lanikai Pillbox Hike, also known as Kaiwa Ridge Trail overlooks the beautiful Lanikai Beach (45min), which is close to Kailua. It is an intermediate hike and has beautiful views of the little islands (Mokus) off of Lanikai. It is a beautiful white sands beach with beautiful calm waters. Parking can be an issue so, just observe the parking signs and be sure to not park on the road. I think they get upset about that. Look at what most cars do for cues. After you do the hike go to Lanikai beach. It is a beautiful calm beach with light turquoise blue waters.

I am listing the Manoa Falls Trial but there is also right by it the Aihualama Falls Trail. These are right by the Lyon Arboretum. The Arboretum has many trails by it. Since the area is incredibly lush with 165 inches of rain/year and nestled in the back of Manoa Valley and by the Koolau Mountains, be prepared for rain and mosquitos. It can get slippery. The trails differ in difficulty and duration so be sure to check out info in hiking guide posts and books. My niece went here with her friend to the Manoa Falls and was delighted, muddy and tired. Parking may be limited as well.

Kualoa Ranch is a working ranch that is located about 5min away from us. It is located by the beautiful Koolau mountains. This is where many movies like Jurassic Park and Pearl Harbor were shot. The park has a lot of attractions like bus, horse and ATV rides. Mostly just being by the park is beautiful. Some evenings you will see all the horses out in the field eating. However, this place is quite busy with tourist buses. There is Aunty Pat's for food (breakfast and lunch) but it is more like cafeteria food. While it has sit down places, it can get hectic with all the people waiting for their activities until they take off..

It is very pretty here looking at the water on one side and the Koolau mountains. Across the street is Kualoa Ranch. Waimea Bay Park is simply beautiful whether you swim in the water or just sit by it. In the winter months, it is surf season and when it is breaking in the bay, you will know it by its crashing waves, white foam and powerful movement. In the summer months, it is just calm and serene with beautiful blue waters that are very clean. You can surf, boogie board, swim or just relax and do nothing and you will be happy.

Sunset Beach is one of the top surfing beaches. It is a beautiful beach to visit and just watch the surf. The water is very blue, gets deep very fast and can have serious rip currents depending on the season. In the summer it is calmer and nice for a cool dip. In the winter, this is a big surf spot. You can go there to watch some of the surf contests then and see world class surfers competing. It is quite exciting. The beach has a lifeguard.

Halona Blowhole is a fun sight to see. It is an underground lava tube open at both sides to the ocean waves. As the waves enter and pressurize the tube, the water shoots out like a geyser. When the waves are very big, the water may rise to 30 ft in the air. The surrounding vista is also just beautiful. The waters on this side of the Windward Coast are a deep blue and often you will feel the nice ocean breezes. The lookout has a parking area and paved areas to observe the geyser event. This is a Japanese restaurant that serves a hotpot style cooking. It is close by (20min) and is located in a shopping mall by the grocery store Safeway and general store Longs Drugs. It is fun. Their chocolate croissants are wonderful. Although there is not a lot of chocolate, they use Valrona's chocolate, which is wonderful. It is located in Manoa Marketplace in Honolulu and is about 50-60min away. www.bakerieshonolulu.com
Phuket Thai is our favorite Thai restaurant. They have a nice variety of Thai cuisine. We enjoy their currys and Pad Siew and Chicken with Black Bean and Ginger as well as Green Papaya Salad. We have not found a dish we haven't liked here. Phuket Thai is about 50-60min away and is close to Ala Moana shopping center. Paid parking is in the adjacent lot right around the corner. www.phuketthaihawaii.com/#/

Haleiwa Joe's in Kaneohe is a nice place to have dinners and cocktails. The food and setting are very nice and peaceful. The downside is they don't take reservations. So, you will want to get there when they open or just dine in their lounge, which by the way is still nice as you have a view of the lush garden and mountains. Many folks get married in the garden as it is so peaceful. This restaurant is limited to dinners and on Sundays a brunch. An alternative is Haleiwa Joe's in Haleiwa. The food is very similar and it is a nice a relaxing meal there too. They are open for lunch and dinner. The restaurant in Kaneohe and Haleiwa are 30 and 45+ min. https://haleiwajoes.com/locations/

Waialua Bakery is a small deli cafe that has great sandwiches and smoothies and cookies. There is not much space to sit down though we usually find a spot. They bake everything on site and roast their own turkey meat for the sandwiches. We love the smoothies and the Beachcomber cookies. If you are in Haleiwa and are in the mood for a sandwich this is a good place to go to. About 50-60min away. (Not open on Sundays) (ww.waialuabakery.com)

Roys restaurant is excellent with a wide fare of dishes that is inspired by our local cultures. It has received many awards and Chef Roy Yamaguchi has won many awards. Dagon serves Bermese cuisine located at 2671 S. King Street in Honolulu. Try their Tea Leaf Salad. It is unusual and very tasty. The chicken pumpkin stew is our favorite. Parking can be difficult as they have limited number of spots behind them and the rest is street parking. We reccommend reserving a spot if you go. We go when they open and usually don't need a reservation if you can leave by 6-6:30PM. (https://www.instagram.com/dagonburmesecuisine/

Mokes has awesome breakfasts. This is definitely our favorite breakfast place on the Windward side of the island. It is a nice sit down place with a country feel that allows you to relax and linger. Ted’s Bakery serves a variety of baked goods and breakfast and sandwich and plate lunches that are for take out. So if you are on your way to the North Shore or coming back from it, this may be nice place to stop and get a bite. They have some café tables and chairs outside. Most folks love their chocolate haupia and cream pies, which you can also get at Times Supermarket and probably Foodland. Located at 59-024 Kamehameha Hwy. Open from 7AM to 8 or 8:30PM

Domino Pizza is a take out pizza that is close by (~20min away) and does delivery. If you want to dine in, this is a good option. They offer decent pizza as well as other food entres. The pizza here is quite good and we enjoyed it. The place has a sports bar setting. Expect for a medium pizza with two toppings to cost around $24 + tax/tip. It is located in Kaneohe Shopping Mall so it is about 20+ minutes away. It is a sit down restaurant. Oddly, you can save 3.5% of the bill if you pay in cash. This seemed odd to us as we have never had that at a restaurant.
