This little gem of a coffee shop is my favorite eatery, in close proximity of the Airbnb. They serve shakes, sandwiches, soups, desserts and more. The outdoor seating is wonderful during warm weather. Their shop takes art, on consignment, from local artists. They participate in Gallery Hops, several times a year. Owners Tim and Ellie are the absolute best..and food is more than reasonably priced. Located just a couple of blocks away.

Stella's is more than a deli. They served food made from locally sourced, ingredients. I love their ASH free hamburgers, and super wonderful breakfast/brunch on the weekends. It is a quiet spot, where one can talk, without having to raise your voice to be heard. They have limited seating on the patio, during warm weather. Check their website for specific hours.

Native Cafe is a must...when they are open. It is an open air dining area, nestled on the grounds of Michler's Florist and Greenhouse, family owned for generations. They are closed during the winter months, and on rainy days. Enjoy craft beer, and light food. A leisurely walk through the greenhouses, adds flavor to the already rich experience of visiting Native Cafe. Life music might happen while you are there. The back entrance to the cafe is literally through the gate, at the back of the parking lot across High Street.

Chef John owns this Farm-To-Table casual eatery. Full bar, patio dining, weather permitting. A taste treat, a little more costly than some, but worth the extra. 15-20 minute walk, 5 minute drive.

French pot ice cream, sundaes, shakes and candies. My favorite place in Lexington for ice cream. Graeter's roots started in Cincinnati, Ohio as a family owned business. Well worth checking out, if you love ice cream. 15-20 minute walk...5 minute drive.

Charlie Brown's is a funky bar that serves mixed drinks, beer, inexpensive sandwiches, desserts, and veggie burgers. It's not well lit, has floor to ceiling book shelves full of old books and several couch options for seating, in addition to table and bar stools. Rumor is, a $100 bill is hidden in one of those books. 15-20 minute walk, 5 minute drive.

Best burger in Lexington...in my opinion. Smithtown is located in the old Rainbow Baking Company building, along with West Sixth Brewing. Order at the register in Smithtown, take a seat in West Sixth Brewery and a server will bring your food. West Sixth is known for their craft beer. An exciting new area of Lexington. Food Chain is located in the Bread Box complex as well. Check out their website to learn about greens, and tilapia grown hydroponically, and the service they provide of teaching about food to inner city kids.

A must, if you are new to Lexington. A family owned bakery since 1929. The original bakery was on North Limestone and Sixth street. They moved to the new location on Winchester Road, simulating the structure of the old building. The hand formed, yeast doughnut melts in your mouth, especially when they are warm. Hours 6:30 to noonish...closed Monday and Tuesday. They offer cakes, filled and iced doughnuts..but my favorite by far is the yeast doughnuts. Be prepared to stand in line. I urge you to strike up conversation with others as you wait. The diversity is awesome...some customers dressed in PJ's, some in suits, and everything in between. I love hearing stories from fellow patrons.

Parks & Nature

This natural spring was the key reason for the settling of Lexington...a water source. The park was in ruins at one point, but has been cleaned up and developed just enough to make it a desirable, safe area for short hikes. It's located in the midst of a commercial warehouse area, truly a gem tucked away in the hustle and bustle of the city.

This park is about a 30 minute drive to the countryside. It is a haven for wildlife. The nature center schedules informative hikes and one can hike on their own. One trail goes to an overlook of the river-be safe as you view the river from the large rocks. Springtime offers hillsides covered in wildflowers, of many colors, as the staff and volunteers are working diligently to eradicate non native plants to encourage growth of the wildflowers native to our region.

Tennis courts, skate park, swimming pool, playground, softball fields, and basket ball courts. This neighborhood park is home to numerous old trees, as well as newer plantings. You will encounter a few homeless people in the mix, but the park is a safe place to stroll through or hang out.

Great paved hiking trail through trees representing different areas of Kentucky. Lots of green space for picnic, trees to accommodate hammock hanging, Master Gardener gardens, art installations, plentiful benches along the hiking trail. Areas of the trails are shaded, providing a respite, during the heat of summer. Tour the children's garden for a fee.

About an hour away, great hiking trails, incredible vistas. Natural Bridge is one of the better known arches, but there's lots more in the gorge. It is a rock climber's heaven. Miguel's Pizza-the best pizza I've ever eaten, closed Dec 1-March 1. Warm weather might alter those dates a bit. Check out their website, or FB page for details of their schedule.

Sightseeing

Keeneland is the home of thoroughbred horse racing...known for beautiful landscaping and flowers for the Spring racing meet. One must try the Kentucky burgoo and bread pudding, when attending an event at Keeneland. The grounds are open for the public to enjoy the beauty of race track and grounds, even when race meets, or sales are not in session. If you are an early to riser, you can catch the horses training and exercising on the tracks-you might want to take a camera to capture the beauty of the horses on the track, in the early morning light.
