Perched at 8300 ft, with a population of 1300, it's about 5 miles up the road from the house. Walk through the town, or keep walking up the road out of town for some good high-altitude exercise. Yes, the 2-room school house is still in use! There's a small close-by too. Fourth of July is quite the event. The day starts with a pancake breakfast outside the 2-room school house, then the local parade, followed by food and music at the Gold Hill Inn. https://goldhilltown.com/

Sightseeing

Amazing views, many places to eat, on the way to the gambling towns of Black Hawk and Central City. Head north out of town, and there's hiking. If you're lucky enough to be in town in February, it's all about Frozen Dead Guy Days. See website for more details. https://nederlandco.org/things-to-do/

Another old mining town, Ward was almost the capital of Colorado. At 9,400 ft, it's got spectacular mountain views. It's just off of Peak To Peak Highway, and about 40 minutes from Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. https://www.uncovercolorado.com/towns/ward/ is a great website to get info about the town and links to other local attractions.

Not much to say about RMNP. It's beautiful. Go up for the day, go for a hike. Go through to the other side, and check out Grandby or Hot Sulfur Springs. For some one-lane dirt road time, take Fall River Road up to the 10,000 ft high Visitor Center. Only part of the road is accessible in the winter due to altitude and massive amounts of snow. Please check out the website for current conditions. https://www.uncovercolorado.com/towns/ward/ NOTE: Timed Entry Permit Reservations needed to get into the Park May/June through October.
