A favourite cafe on Gertrude Street. I find myself there most days that i'm home. If the weather is fine a table on the street is the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee and watch the quiet buzz of street go by. Archies owner Anthony has worked hard to deliver a venue with a really attentive team and an incredible menu. Open 7 days for breakfast and lunch - Their coffee is magnificent and you'll find the coffee machine is always working overtime keeping the locals and visitors caffeinated . Try the crispy eggs or rockling burger.

Andrew McConnell's Marion wine bar is one of the best places to wine and eat on Gertrude street. This is a great restaurant and is suitable if you're looking to treat yourself to a very nice meal. Its also open for breakfast on the weekend (which is quite reasonably priced).

I enjoy a plant based diet - so Smith & Daughters is one of the places I frequent most - I'd recommend their meat ball (meat free) sub and Tiramisu. Smith and Deli (their sister venue) is just around the corner and is generally open for take aways during the day

I'd probably put this at the top of my list for favourite local places to eat - A pescatarian / vegie / vegan Japanese influenced menu that is very well priced and excellent quality. I'd recommend any of the curries and a Yuzu Soda (with or without vodka) has got to be one of the most refreshing drinks going round. The communal table works really well for solo diners or couples. Get there before 7 to grab a table.

Gertrude Street has the richest indigenous history of any other part of Melbourne. Charcoal Lane is a social enterprise that serves up native Australian food, culture and hospitality. Australian flavours that are inextricably linked with memory and emotion, inspired by the land that produced them. Week days you'll be able to walk in - on weekends i'd recommend booking. Prince Harry and Meghan dined here on their last visit to Melbourne - naturally it was an exciting day for Gertrude Street.

I once asked the owner Tim how he'd describe his venue and he said 'its not for him to say' Grub is a bohemian wonderland with a food van out front which started it all. Out the back now sits a venue that used to be owner Tim and Marks residence - it represents all that Fitzroy is known for ...its organically evolved over the past 6 years to be a venue where everyone is welcome - except they draw the line at providing booster seats for small kids. I love having a drink here in the afternoon. Its equally good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On the real hot days they'll have the water misters going in the glasshouse. Worth checking out.

In the 1940's there were 23 dairies in Fitzroy, now there is one - St Davids - inner city -Melbourne's only Micro-Dairy catering to 600 customers in a 10 km radius of Fitzroy - St Davids has put itself on the map as being a premium supplier of Full Cream Milk and Butter. Step back in time to the days of beautiful fresh milk direct from the farm. Drop in to buy some milk or butter. They even refill your glass milk bottles - just like the old days

Gabriel is like stepping inside an espresso bar from the 1950s – with a bit of a modern edge. Named in honour of Gabriel de Clieu who introduced coffee to French colonies in the 1720s. Its a beautifully designed cafe that sits at the corner of Gertrude and George Street. The best seat in the house is the corner part of the rounded booth on the right side when you walk in. The menu is excellent and varied - the perfect place for brunch seven days a week.

Sake, music and some delicious small plates to share. Considered to be one of the most authentic izakaya dining experience in Fitzroy. The owners Fumi Tamura and and his wife Takako arrived onto Gertrude Street in 2019 - their sake represents a new era for the Japanese icon - many are unfiltered, unpasteurised and utterly delicious – a bit like natural wine. A great place for a walk or a jog. Walk down Gertrude street towards the city (left out the front door) and you'll find yourself at the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building. This is definitely a destination for Fitzroy locals - if you happen to be visiting Fitzroy on a particularly warm day and wish to cool down like a local (locals very rarely make their way to the South to St Kilda Beach) a trip to the Fitzroy pool can be a pleasant afternoon of swimming, bathing and people watching. At a point in Melbourne's history Little Napier Street was ground zero for Brothels, Sly Grog Shops and Prostitutes - the conditions in this area were the worst in Australia. The same can be said about many of the laneways and streets around Fitzroy. A Police officer working in Fitzroy made the following statement about the area - I have no hesitation in saying that Fitzroy South is the home of all classes of Criminals, Prostitutes and other dirty lazy people. The reason why these unfortunate class of people take up their residence in Fitzroy is that Fitzroy South is very close to the city of Melbourne, can be reached without paying a fare and cheap rooms can be obtained from lodging-houses.

When the iconic artist Keith Haring was living in Melbourne in 1984 he decided to leave his mark on the front fence of the house he was staying in. 35 years on - some of it still survives today. Look out for it - about 150 metres from the corner of Gertrude and Napier down the hill towards Fitzroy town hall. If you'd like to see his major piece painted in the same year visit 35 Johnston St, Collingwood

If i'm stepping out of Fitzroy and wanting to show a friend around Melbourne that has never been here before I will usually start with the Shrine of Remembrance. Quite possibly the most sacred building we have in our city - and because of that it occupies the most prominent location - its free to visit - each year on ANZAC day (Australian and New Zealand Army Core) remembrance days are held at this sight. The view from the top of the Shrine is incredible and allows you to look 360 degrees around Melbourne - looking north to the city and Fitzroy as well as south towards St Kilda and the beach. After a visit to the Shrine a walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens (located immediately next to the Shrine) is also a must.

A trip to Melbourne should include a visit to our iconic Royal Botanic Gardens - to make your trip even more memorable take a punt on the ornamental lake with a serene little cruise around the gardens - a fun way to explore a Melbourne icon. https://puntingonthelake.com.au Winter : punting on the Lake is closed for the Winter season *June 11th – August 31st

This will certainly be one of the more fancy recommendations on my Melbourne and Fitzroy guide - at the top of the Rialto building 525 Collins Street (at one point the tallest building in Melbourne) exists Lui Bar - attached to the iconic Vue De Monde restaurant - Lui Bar is a great spot to have a cocktail and a small snack and take in an incredible view of Melbourne from above. I like recommending this bar rather than the Eureka tower observation deck as theres no charge to get in - but of course the drinks aren't free. Dusk or early evening is the pick of the times to be up there - a reservation is not required - though you will need to be in at least a collar or semi formal - no shorts permitted.

Recognised as a place of outstanding historic value to Australia - Abbotsford convent is a large site belonging to the citizens of Victoria. It has a blend of cafe, bars and art on rotation. Lentil as anything is my favourite place to eat - a social enterprise with a pay what you feel scheme which has been creating positive change in the community for many years now

A small and yet iconic independent bookshop in one of the great parts of Melbourne's central business district. Paperback has occupied this sight since the 1960's. The exterior will charm you and gives a nod to the how old independent stores once were in Melbourne - A great range of books and equally competitive with pricing. It almost feels like you're stepping into a library of sorts - a quiet whisper is required.

Now i don't expect you'll have a costume party to attend whilst in Melbourne - but if you do (or even if you don't) Rose Chongs is arguably the most iconic premises on Gertrude street (after the Builders Arms of course) Its cliental include Beyonce and Jay Z to name drop a few famous customers over the years. Rose Chong has occupied Gertrude street for decades with the support of her flamboyant staff known as 'the Chongettes' - a visit just to have a poke around is always a fun time.
