With its many parks and 300 days of sunshine a year, Austin makes for a pretty awesome playground for outdoor enthusiasts. When you’re ready to amp it up, join one of the University of Texas' adventure trips, which have included caving, rock climbing and stand-up paddleboarding in the past. These trips are open to Longhorns and non-Longhorns alike (students just get a little cheaper deal), and they’re offered mostly in the fall and spring to coincide with the university’s semesters.

Don’t be surprised if you feel a little underdressed when you arrive at the mouth of the trailhead: The historic cottage and wandering peacocks make Mayfield a popular wedding destination. But walk past the frequent parties and there are 24 acres to explore, including a path that takes you down to a dock overlooking Lake Austin and several small lily ponds filled with turtles. Be warned that this hike isn’t going to build up your quads. But if you are looking to unwind after a stressful week, it can’t be beat.

Want to switch up your exercise routine? Skip leg day and head to River Place—one of the most challenging hikes in Austin. Each of the three trails that make up the system has something to offer. Commune with nature on the Fern Trail, which runs by a series of waterfalls. A challenging set of steps makes up the Canyon Trail, leading you past several interesting rock formations and a few scattered benches where you can huff and puff. Panther Hollow is the longest stretch, with demanding elevations in the upper part and a more restful journey through the lower—providing a much better workout cool down than any gym.

Another favorite Austin dive bar and one of the city’s best-kept secrets, Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon is also host to one of its weirdest weekly events. On Sundays, locals gather here on Burnet Road for a unique version of Bingo called “chicken shit bingo.” The game involves chickens, chicken feed, and what chickens do after they eat. Participants purchase a $2 ticket, which corresponds to a number on the table. Grab a beer and watch: if the chicken eliminates on your ticket’s number, you win a cash prize.

Situated on 14 acres overlooking Lake Austin, this property once belonged to the “Father of Texas” and Austin’s namesake, Stephen F. Austin, who served as the first Secretary of State in the new Texas republic. The restored 1916 Italian-style villa was home to another Texas legend, Clara Driscoll, and the beautiful grounds are the second campus of downtown sister museum, the Contemporary Austin. Peruse the Gatehouse Gallery and wander through the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park, which features long-term and permanent contemporary sculpture and unique art installations.

If you’ve ever left the city traveling east on Highway 290, chances are you’ve driven past the turn-off for J. Lorraine Ghost Town. By no means a historic site, this delightfully strange recreation of an 1800’s Western town is free to the public and boasts an old, eery atmosphere. Then again, it also happens to have a maze, an outdoor movie screen, a grill and bar serving up their signature Ghost Burger and, oddly enough, a water slide. Who knows—when you’re wandering around the property, maybe you’ll have your own paranormal encounter.

It’s one thing to experience the city walking or driving through the streets, but it’s quite another to experience it flying through the skies. With Austin Biplane, you can take 20- to 45-minute flights around downtown, Lake Austin and Lake Travis in an open-cockpit biplane. So what exactly is this biplane like? Think: two pairs of wings and the barnstormer days of leather flying caps, goggles and bomber jackets, and you’ll probably have the right idea. While you don’t have to sign up for an acrobatic flight, that’s totally an option for all you thrill-seeking, Red Baron wannabes.

Swap the headache that is Austin traffic for an old-fashioned ride aboard one of Austin Steam Train’s flyers. The trains make round trips from a depot in Cedar Park, and you can choose which car you’d like passage on—each one is its own vintage piece of locomotive history.
