Sightseeing

At 27 miles long by 4 miles wide, the Matanuska Glacier is the largest glacier accessible by car in the United States. after paying an access fee you can take a maintained road to a parking lot at the edge, hike out on an easily negotiable mass of ancient ice leading to an awe-inspiring wall of aqua. one could venture further onto the mass, though this is where the crampons would be recommended. there are guided tours in the area that provide heavier repelling gear for the very adventurous. you can also use ATV's to access the glacier along the Matanuska river and avoid the fee, and get a bit more out of your adventure!

Arts & Culture

The Palmer Museum of History and Art, through the generosity of members of the community (past and present), maintains an extensive historical artifact and photograph collection comprised of objects predominantly from the late 19th century through the early 21st century. Items within the collection pertain to the exploration, settlement, trade, mining, and agricultural history of the region, as well as the Palmer Colony Project (which occurred during the Great Depression era) which set the foundation for the town of Palmer. They also have other great ideas for what to do while in town

Essentials

we prefer Fred Meyer over Carr's, not just because of value, our new store now has a Murray's cheese Experience! (can you tell I love cheese?) with over 175 verities and the masters to guide your taste buds. for a small town that's pretty impressive, boars head café, Starbucks and many souvenirs. Fishing gear, bait, and they currently sell firearms in case you lost your musket. pretty much everything you would expect a chain grocer / retailer to have. Hours: 7AM- 12AM

Entertainment & Activities

I recall our first visit to the largest captive herd of musk oxen in the world, I was simply blown away by the size of these gentle giants from the ice age. The farm offers seasonal- guided, and engaging up close experiences with the arctic ungulates. There are also exhibits, and a gift shop featuring some of the world's only gently hand-combed qiviut fiber, qiviut yarn, and qiviut garments. So, if your visit is during the summer, don't miss a 45 min. experience you'll never forget with “Oomingmak”, which means “The Bearded One” to the Alaskan Natives. there prices are fair at $11. for adults, $5 for children. best of all, its only miles down the road! link below https://www.muskoxfarm.org/
