Ferretti Housed within the ruins of an ancient battery built back when the Knights of St. John were still strutting around the island, wine bars don’t come much more historic than Ferretti. One of Malta’s more stylish nightspots, guests can enjoys their drinks on the outdoor terrace overlooking a moat, or move inside into contemporary interiors. The cellar offers an eclectic selection of vintages, both from Malta and abroad, while the kitchen serves up classic Mediterranean fare.

Rampila Restaurant Built by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century, Rampila Restaurant is set within the original defence bastions of Valletta, in a tunnel dating back to 1570. Wander down the stone stairs from the street and you’ll find yourself in an intimate domed dining room, and just off of this, a smaller bar stacked to the ceiling with fine wines. Through a glass panel in the floor you can see down into the wine cellar, carved straight out of the rock, but it’s probably easier to pick your poison from the carefully curated wine list

Simons Pub is about 2 minutes from the apartment and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming to all. Opens for evenings after 8pm but for a good pint there is nowhere more convenient and enjoyable. Holding annual music festivals, Simon’s Pub is often referred to as one of the best bars in Malta. The inside is decorated in an eclectic style, with dark green paint and lots of plants. Victorian fire extinguishers, Georgian water heaters, ship’s portholes and sundry farming implements hang from the walls. Established in 1984, Simon’s Pub creates a relaxed atmosphere for young adults to have fun. It is reasonably priced.

With a population of less than 3,000, the petite town of Għargħur is one of the oldest on the island, and unsurprisingly, home to some of the most traditional bars in Malta. With parts of the original décor intact (including mosaic floors and antique furnishings) this is a great place to while away an evening.

Located behind an unassuming little house in ix-Xaghra, on the island of Gozo, you’ll find one of the most unusual caves in Malta, Ninu’s Cave. Discovered by local resident Joseph Rapa, the cave is accessed via a steep set of stairs inside a private family home. Guided tours are usually taken by a member of the family, who, for a small fee, will point out all the interesting geological features of the cave, such as some impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

A large subterranean burial chamber dug out of the rock and spread across three separate levels, the Hypogeum is undoubtedly one of the most impressive caves in Malta. First discovered in 1902, excavations continued up until 1911, with the many interconnected chambers and passageways finally opening to an intrigued public in 1908. Unfortunately, all this interest resulted in some damage to the Hypogeum’s delicate prehistoric wall paintings, meaning only ten people are now allowed in per day. Best get in there quick, then!

Like Fort St. Elmo, the Citadel’s a survivor of the Great Siege of 1565, but the hill on which it’s perched has been settled since at least Neolithic times; commanding 360° views of the surrounding countryside, it would have been an enviable military stronghold. Fancy seeing what 19th century British engineers built to protect Malta from the Italians? Fort Rinella itself is impressive, but what set it apart from some of the other forts in Malta was its massive 100-ton gun positioned on the coastal battery – definitely enough to keep the Italian navy at bay. For a touch of historical flair, plan your visit to coincide with the regular volunteer tours where guides dress up like Victorian soldiers to show you round.
