Donnelley’s castle is a formation of rocks with views and cavelike formations. Dogs are allowed ( our dog, Molly, loves to come here) children just love it too. It’s such an exciting place for them to visit, and it’s free. Wear sturdy shoes. There are picnic tables there, but only a drop toilet.

Mount Marley is right in Stanthorpe and provides sweeping views across the town. Free telescopes are provided. There is a lovely short walk around the summit. There are also mountain bike trails from the summit for experienced riders only.Dog friendly.

Car is the best way to get around
We are an easy 5 to 10 minute walk to town, on a concrete path all the way. Car is best to visit attractions. There are also winery tours so you can drink without the worry of driving home.

A walk along Quartpot creek
Stanthorpe has lovely walks along the creek right in town. Make sure you visit “ the big thermometer “ and call into the great tourist information centre. Don’t miss the lovely walk to the old railway bridge known as the red bridge. Just ask for directions.

Free places to visit
Mount Marley is right in town with sweeping views of the town and free telescopes to view it with. There’s a lovely short easy walk( about 10 mins) at the top which circumnavigates the summit. This walk is dog and kid friendly. There are lots of lovely parks and walks that are free. Also Girraween national park and the Ballandean pyramid. The kids will also love the Ballandean dinosaur.

Restaurants and wineries get busy on weekends in winter. When dining, it’s advisable to book in advance.

Bring warm clothing.
Stanthorpe is the coldest place in QLD so bring warm clothes in winter. Beanie, scarf and coat may be required if we have a cold snap.Layers are better. Also bring hiking boots or track shoes for walking if you intend to do so. Temperatures are regularly in the minus in the mornings.
