The Food Scene

Some known and not so known favorite food joints of mine that will dazzle your tastebuds. From $ to $$$$, you don't need a Michelin plate to enjoy all the diverse flavors of Chinatown.
Places like Jua are the reason why Chinatown held the title as “Bangkok’s hippest areas” for the better part of 2018 and as we are just about to enter 2020, it's still hitting the mark. Upmarket but wallet-friendly; concise but creative; artsy and effortlessly cool. In other words, it hits a sweet spot that most restaurants miss but gets you right in mood with a great selection of Izakaya style bites set in old town Chareonkrung area. Its a stones throw from the house.

Just around the corner from the house is Ba Hao. Neon Chinese letter signs and a do-nothing approach to shop-house restoration give Ba Hao the requisite look of old Hong Kong cool, complete with open frontage that spills onto the Yaowarat streets. Drinks also pay nods to the neighborhood's Chinese history. Opium, for example, sees a classic negroni spiked with ginseng and herbal liquor, while Five Rivers infuses the flavors of Chinese five spice into rum. Don't forget to try General Tsao's chicken

Directly behind the house and hidden on the rooftop, it feels like you’re entering the secret garden as you ascend the creaky wooden staircase that leads to this rustic rooftop bar called Wallflowers. Through a maze of hanging plants, flower tube chandeliers, exposed brick walls, fairy lights and wooden ladders, you’ll be met with international dishes and Garden of Eden-themed cocktails.

This neon-lit eatery is small, but bursting with style. Red printed reed mats line the walls, serving as the main design element. A long steel dining table takes up most of the room, surrounded by metal chairs with woven cushions, each one with a unique floral design. At the back of the room, the three chefs work over gleaming brass pots filled with simmering curries, and a wooden tabletop laden with vegetables. The menu, which changes monthly, pays homage to comforting Thai fare and allows each chef’s forte to shine. Chef Mew has a knack and passion for grilled dishes, while Chef Aew’s strength lies in yum and chili dips. Chef Jai is in charge of the curries. To start, try the refreshing yum salad with rose apple, cilantro and Thai herbs dressed with fried shallots and palm sugar. Follow it up with the relish of tangerine with grilled tiger prawns and deep-fried pomfret (B 580).

Overseen by Karit “Gong” Yuvaboon, Black King uses Italian food as a palette to experiment with new flavor combinations, particularly those that draw on Asian cuisines. You may have seen their beautifully puffy pizzas on social media. Specifically, the Black King, with its charcoal-black crust, chopped scallop, squid, and bacon (B345). The secret to this eye-catching creation is squid ink: enough to lend the 72-hour-raised, lightly charred crust and jet-black sauce a faint umami, but not enough to turn you off it. Other dishes on the menu likewise pack in a lot of flavor, thanks to a near-obsessive attention to detail. The mariana pizza (B245) is topped with white anchovies—milder in taste than the standard tinned fish—to give it some pop. A spin on their Inglorious AOP (B399 small/B650 large) adds chunks of Surat Thani tiger prawn to a chili-flecked dish of al dente pasta, which is then coated in oven-baked prawn head fat to give it even more punch. And house-made red and green pesto elevate a seafood stew, loaded with clams and sea snails (B490), which begs to be soaked up with the squid ink bread served on the side.

This is my favorite restaurant in Bangkok and cannot be missed if your a seasoned foodie !! Samlor means ‘tricycle’ in Thai and a traditional one hangs outside this cosy restaurant. Inside the loft-style space, chef Napol creates flavoursome, well-presented elevated Thai cuisine inspired by local street food with specially selected ingredients. They also have a la carte menu, including cut of the day (main course of the day) and catch of the day (fish menu of the day) available. Guests need to check with the chef at the spot what they specially have on that day. The seasonal tasting menu is absolutely spectacular and the crab omelette melts in your mouth... forget jay fai for this one !!

This nose-to-tail and offal restaurant serves elevated Isaan fare made from quality ingredients sourced from local Thai farmers. The chef puts great care into balancing flavours and presenting attractive plates – and this is evident with dishes like the Aged Beef Tongue. Meals are served in a dining room that matches the rustic with the industrial; a dry-ageing meat cabinet adds a modern touch. Don’t forget to check the blackboard for aged steak specials.

The most famous Pad Thai restaurant can be found in Chinatown, located almost right next to Jay Fai, the most famous Thai restaurant in Bangkok. In this street, you can find all sorts of somewhat legendary Thai restaurants. When at Thip Samai, I recommend you go for their Superb Pad Thai with Large Prawns (200 THB), although there is a regular version available as well for only 90 THB. When opting for the Superb version, you get two huge, mouth watering prawns to devour.

Having been awarded a Michelin star two years in a row, this roadside eatery has attracted worldwide media attention. Jay Fai has worked with many world-class institutions. Chef René Redzepi of Noma (two Michelin stars) invited her to the 6th MAD Symposium in Copenhagen. And with the amount of foreign foodies pouring into the restaurant, Ms. Yuwadee Chansuta, the daughter of Jay Fai, had to quit her job to help her mother who was not fluent in foreign languages. Khun Yuwadee helps arrange the queue, taking note of cooking and watching over the famous crab omelet until golden according to her mother's standards.

A great bustling street kitchen in the heart of Yaowarat Road, Fikeaw serves up the freshest seafood grills, fish soups and fried dishes one can imagine. Known for its chef putting on a spectacular fireball during cooking, his ways have been tamed these days but the taste is still as good as it gets. Expect large servings, best shared together with friends.

Lek & Rut is a popular seafood street food restaurant serving a huge range of different Thai and Chinese seafood dishes. Try the squid steamed in lime and garlic sauce, deep fried shrimp patties, roasted freshwater shrimp, and water mimosa. If you love seafood, Lek & Rut is a great restaurant to sit and wash down some cold beer with some delicious seafood, watch the street procession and soak in all the chaos and atmosphere on the main road.

Quirky cafe best offering sunset vibes along the Chaopraya River and one of my favourite go to places to chill and relax and feel like a tourist again. Food is an interesting mix of Thai and Japanese inspired tapas style sharing plates. Good selection of whiskey and gin and craft beer makes this a great place to watch life along the river

Sometimes keeping a secret is a selfish thing, like this shop that sells the most amazing crispy fried pork noodles I've ever tasted. Letting this place out of the bag requires an understanding that I will eventually lose this special locale to the masses and the consequences therefore are price increases, waiting times double and the sense of family service that comes with these small eateries are slowly exhausted to a plastic fake numbness as the local customers are displaced and forced out of the area. Well, we cant fight gentrification can way, but we can slow it down. Try and get here before 12 as walk ins and take away orders start to pile in quickly. I suggest the bah mee moo grob hang which is crispy dry pork noodles and prawn wontons without soup. One of the reasons why it's so good is that they make there own noodles on site, these are the most tastiest noodles I've ever had and even eaten alone are amazing. To give the pork its crispy texture and keep it soft on the inside, the family have added a secondary process to the cooking which involves a secondary marination of the pork giving it its exceptional extra dimension of meaty flavor and texture. I usually have two bowls its that good. I hope you get to experience this place before the Michelins find out :)

Traditional and novel converge at this Thai-Chinese fine dining restaurant from chef Pichaya “Pam” Soontornyanakij. Set in a historical Sino-Portuguese building that used to be Pam's family’s Chinese pharmacy, Potong blends rustic and modern decor from ground floor bar to rooftop chill space. Her progressive 20-course set menu is infused with storytelling and hits its peak with aged duck breast. To make it even better, ask the sommelier for a wine pairing.

Thrilled to share that my favorite chefs from Charmgang have recently (Dec 23) unveiled Charmkrung on the 6th floor of an old building in the thriving Charoenkrung Road area ! Dive into their new menu for a a diverse culinary journey at a reasonable and not over the top price. My recommendation is to go with a table of 4 so you can share all the dishes on offer.

Described as a “proper dive bar”, Independence Bar is ideal for tipplers who don’t really care for a stylish atmosphere or going somewhere to see and be seen. It is set in a large (by Soi Nana standards) shophouse where an auto part shop used to stand, and features rough-around-the-edges decor that are reminiscent of the dive bars in Berlin and New York, such as murals created by local graffiti artists and neon lights.

Teens of Thailand's founder Niks Anuman-Rajadhon and group bar director Attaporn De Silva who say their bars’ continued presence is due to their passion for mixology as well as their determination to fight back. The duo teamed up to establish TAX as a response to the Thai government’s lack of financial support, not to mention their unjust treatment of bars during the pandemic. “TAX is the result of our being oppressed, discriminated against and being taken advantage of by those taking our taxes,” says Niks, who adds that they are sick of “paying taxes and seeing no good come out from it.” At TAX, alcohol left from other usages is turned into vinegar. “You can tax all our booze, but you cannot tax our vinegar!” This by-product is then used to make vinegar-based cocktails such as Riesling Vinegar (B400), which combines vinegar made from white wine with vermouth that’s been infused with grilled bell peppers and passion fruit. You also have Issan Coco (B340), a drink that TAX dubs “the greatest of all time.” A fresh coconut is cracked in front of you to get its water, which is then mixed with sugarcane-based Issan rum. The result is one extremely refreshing drink that proves why TAX is worth your visit.

Crumbling walls, exposed metal rebar, red neon lettering and hanging Chinese lanterns conjure an atmospheric setting for this craft beer bar. Located just minutes from the recently opened and similarly themed Uncle Tim, the bar takes over an abandoned Old Town pharmacy, retaining the original frontage. Order from the drug cabinet-shaped bar—where 13 rotating taps chart anything from Triple Pearl witbier, B220 to Moonzen’s Sour Milk Company Passionfruit IPA, B240—before heading up to the mezzanine to sit amid the lanterns.

Neighborhoods

Talad Noi means “small market”, and is one of the original Chinese settlements in the Rattanakosin period. Dating back to the early Rattanakosin, Sampeng Market (which was Bangkok’s economic centre) was expanded. Chinese people then called the newly expanded part of the market “Ta Lak Kia” which translated to Thai as “Talad Noi”. There is a diversity of ethnicity and religion due to the relocation of Portuguese and Chinese communities after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767. They were given a small piece of land in the Talad Noi. This is evident by several Buddhist temples, a Roman Catholic church, and Chinese Shrines scattering in small communities. However, most notable is the very strong vibe of Chinese community.

Pak Khlong Talat as it is locally known means “market at the mouth of the canal”. The area originally started as a floating market in the early 18th century (during the reign of King Rama I). Later, in the 19th century, the area became a large fish market. In the 1950s, when local authorities grew tired of the market’s fish smell permeating central Bangkok, flower and produce vendors could occupy the area, which eventually developed into the current Bangkok Flower Market.

Sightseeing

I couldn't think of a better way to explore the back side of Bangkoks waterways with Charlie and Captain Keo on their lovely old timber boat. They run a tight ship and are extremely friendly and knowledgable about the river. The highlight of this boat ride is certainly going through the smaller canals (or klongs) and seeing the older, more traditional life amongst the locals on the river. With many interesting stop offs along the way, I recommend at least 3 hours to see the most of this really unique area of Bangkok.
