The good pub guide

This pub is less than a minutes walk from my house. Its famous for its classic 'bangers and mash' as well as winning best roast in Brighton for 2019. It is cosy, warm and friendly.

A very popular Lanes pub, that has a good food offering, serving pub classics made with locally sourced ingredients. There’s a grizzly twist to this historic boozer, it said to have also been the haunt of “Jack the Ripper” who planned his murders from the upstairs bar. It is also a later night destination, with a fun live band every Tuesday and Friday evening.

This little local pub isn't particularly special when you walk in (except for being a classic 'old man pub') but it has the most exceptional and affordable Indian food every evening (they also offer takeaway) - well worth a visit for something a bit more unusual!

The Dover Castle is situated on the midpoint of the hill, about 5 minutes from the house. The pub has recently had a new lease of life and feels like a very Brighton and Hanover kind of place. With a strong eco focus and walls adorned with local art, there is even a garden with graffiti murals and mannequins guarding the entrance. Food is good at the Dover Castle and there is plenty to choose from. With everything from hearty pub food through to tapas and burgers, there is much to like about The Dover Castle.

My favourite restaurant in Brighton, located on what is known as 'restaurant street' Bincho is famous for its fantastic Japanese small plates, each interesting and delicious as well as a fantastic selection of Sake. It is great for both the meat lover or vegan guest and well worth booking ahead.

This tiny Scandi-style restaurant in Brighton is a hit! High levels of concentration and “passion” are needed to hone the delicately constructed, exquisitely presented plates of food. The multi-course tasting menu is super-seasonal and hyper-local (the number of food miles is listed for each ingredient), with the kitchen team sourcing ingredients locally on a daily basis. Meanwhile, foraged pickings come into their own when it comes to sweet treats. The waiting staff are “brilliant on the wine front”, so ask for their advice when it comes to the all-Sussex list. As well as the signature seven-course tasting menu, guests can instead opt to dine from a shorter four-course menu, while there is also a four-course pre-theatre menu available for guests who are heading to see a show at The Theatre Royal. For non-meat eaters, a vegetarian or vegan tasting menu can be requested.

Using ingredients sourced from both Sussex and Spain, Market Restaurant serves a run of Spanish-inspired small plates in a rustic-chic setting, featuring tiled walls, vintage-style chairs and hanging lights. On the regularly-changing menu, you might find dishes such as butter cod with puy lentil and salsa negra, or suckling pig belly with cauliflower and plum, while sides include the likes of fries with chives and manchego, and a truffle mac ‘n’ cheese.
