The Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos is a Christian church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, located in Splantzia Square in Chania. It was originally constructed around 1320 as the monastery catholicon (main church) by the brotherhood of the Monastery of Saint Peter, which belonged to the Dominicans of Khandaka. Architecturally, it follows the style of a wooden-roofed basilica with a transversal nave. In Venetian depictions of the monastery, one can distinguish the church with its tall bell tower and double portico on the north side, although only the western part remains today. After the Ottomans conquered Chania in 1645, the church was converted into a mosque known as Hugar Jamisi, or the Mosque of the Ruler. During this period, an impressive minaret with two balconies was erected in the southwest corner of the structure. It became the central mosque of the city. The minaret was built on the south side of the temple, while a two-story building stood to the west, which was later demolished. The minaret, with its conical metal roof covered in lead sheets, reached a height of 40 meters, making it the tallest in the city. Today, it stands at a height of approximately 34 meters, without the conical roof. The Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos bears historical significance as it has witnessed the transition from a Catholic monastery to an Ottoman mosque. Its architectural elements reflect the influence of both Venetian and Ottoman styles, making it a remarkable cultural and historical landmark in Chania.

It started to be built during the Venetian period, but the work was stopped due to the invasion of the Turks. The completion of the temple took place after many years and with a special permit granted by the Turks. From the outside, it looks like a Venetian fortress and has towers at its four corners with battlements, of which only two survive today. It has dimensions of 40 x 50 meters and has 50 cells on two floors. The church of the Entrances of the Theotokos or Lady of the Angels is a parallelogram with a dome and has columns and sculptural decoration reminiscent of Italian technique. There are two chapels of Saints Deka and Saint John the Stranger, dedicated to the 80 251 founder of the Monastery. Inside the Monastery, there is a very small museum, which houses works of ecclesiastical art and other valuable relics. The Gouvernetou Monastery is located on the Akrotiri peninsula, 19 km north of Chania and 4 km from the Agia Triada Monastery. The route that visitors should follow from the city of Chania is towards the airport, following signs for the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. Additionally, just beyond the monastery lies the stunning beach of Katholiko. Nestled in a picturesque cove surrounded by rugged cliffs, Katholiko Beach offers crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Accessible via a scenic hiking trail from the monastery, this secluded beach provides a serene escape from the bustling city life of Chania.

Tamam is a Turkish word that means: ok, precisely, exactly. As the name suggests you’re going to eat exactly what you’ve been hoping to. Tamam offers both traditional Cretan dishes along with some Turkish specialties, like Giaourtlou Lamb, lamb with yogurt and some tomato-based spicy sauce on top.
