“Although it's a little farther away (about 35 minutes), this park is one of our favorites. Just take 64 west and stay on it (that'll require a left turn at the first traffic light, and a second left once you're in Brevard, just follow the signs for 64 west) a little over 20 miles. Once you get to the Lake Toxaway/Sapphire area, turn left onto NC 281. Go about a mile and turn left onto Grassy Ridge Rd. The park has an awesome visitor center, and just one trail - about 3 miles round trip to Rainbow Falls, and another 1/2 mile each way to Turtleback Falls. The hike is moderate, enjoyable and with a nice swimming hole at the top, with the option to slide down Turtleback Falls (a 20-foot drop) for the daring. It's a hike our whole family enjoys, especially in the summer when there's often a gelato stand in the trailhead parking lot (useful for bribing children to finish the hike). ”

“Did you know that the practice of forestry in the United States began here in Western North Carolina? Visit the Cradle of Forestry for easy, enjoyable walks in the forest and guided tours where you can learn about what it takes to grow and maintain a healthy forest. You'll be amazed to compare the old photos of all the surrounding mountains completely bare of trees compared to the deep, rich forests surrounding us today. ”

“My absolute favorite hike in the area. Beautiful balds and views. Fairly easy, just a couple miles round trip with a moderate climb on the way up. Beautiful drive to get there along the Blue Ridge Parkway (about 45 minutes).”

“Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 418.8 A short downhill hike (partly paved) leads to one of three waterfalls. A popular hiking destination, Graveyard Fields morphs into a wild blueberry patch in late summer and fall, so bring your buckets.”
