Locality
“The mysterious golden-stone Arabic walled city of Mdina crowns a hilltop, and is a world apart from modern Malta. Its hidden lanes offer exquisite architectural detail and respite from the day-tripping crowds, who largely stick to the main street. Today, with its massive walls and peaceful, shady streets, it is often referred to as the Silent City, a nickname that becomes appropriate after dark. Throughout the year, the Mdina area hosts excellent festivals and events ranging from food and art through to classic cars. ”

“The remains of a wealthy Roman household, the ruins of Domvs Romana were accidentally discovered in 1881. Although very little still stands of the original house, some of its incredible mosaic floors are still intact. Beauty buffs will enjoy the selection of archaeological artefacts, including a collection of Roman-era glass perfume bottles and ornate hairpins, which can be viewed in the adjoining museum. ”

History Museum
“The Mdina Dungeons are located beneath the Magisterial Vilhena Palace just inside the main entrance gate to Mdina, at the first turning on the right. Here in these series of secret underground passageways, chambers and cells a number of events, and the often mysterious circumstances surrounding them, have been recreated to portray events from the dark side of Maltese history. From Roman times to the Arabs, the Knights and even Napoleon, you will find episodes and characters from the ancient past portrayed in startling realism, revealing stories sometimes too dramatic to be believed.”

“Totally old School. If you want fancy displays, interactivity, this is not the place for you. Whilst a bit dry and dusty in places, the museum is a truly educational break. Special mention goes to the top floor, showing the wealth of bird life you could expect to see on Malta. ”

Point of Interest
“The underground chapel of St. Agatha (The Ctypt) has unique frescoes, that were painted in 1200. Other 29 frescoes were painted in 1480. The main altar of the Crypt was built over another rock altar in 1666. The catacombs are underground cemeteries to the 2nd and 3rd century AD! Here you can see the different types of graves, some time with the real skeletons. In the catacombs, you can see also two graves with frescoes that date back to the 4th century AD. And there is the earliest rock-cut church in Malta. This is chapel with the freeze all around, with pillars and capital”
