“Built to demonstrate the enormous wealth, proud independence and secular nature of Siena, this 14th-century Gothic masterpiece is the visual focal point of the Campo, itself the true heart of the city. Architecturally clever (notice how its concave facade mirrors the opposing convex curve) it has always housed the city's administration and been used as a cultural venue. Its distinctive bell tower, the Torre del Mangia, provides magnificent views to those who brave the steep climb to the top.”

“St Catherine once lived here with her parents and 24 siblings (locals joke her mother must have been a saint too). Now a pilgrimage site overseen by nuns of the Benedictine order, the home's original kitchen and sleeping area were frescoed and converted into chapels in the 15th century. The larger Chiesa del Crocifisso (closed between 12.30pm and 3pm) was added in the 17th century. The downstairs Orotorio della Camera includes the saint's untouched, nearly bare cell.”

“A place not to be missed ... Chapel of San Michele Arcangelo! The dome is an eighth of the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore (Cathedral of Florence) so that it is known as the Cathedral of Val d'Elsa.”

“A beautiful Abbey of the 12th century. The drive along the winding country road is an incredible pleasure for the eyes. It stands in perfect isolation among secular olive trees and wheat fields.”

“The southern part of the Val D'Orcia is breathtakingly beautiful. In a province overflowing with amazing castles, Radicofani manages to stand out. Castiglioncello Del Trinora, perched on a peak overlooking the whole valley, is a beautifully restored village with a lovely hotel. The rooms are terribly expensive, but you can enjoy the views and the grounds for the price of a glass of wine. It's good wine too! ”
