It is built on the west side of Cynortion Mountain, near modern Lygourio, and belongs to the Epidaurus Municipality. “he Diros Caves are perhaps the most important natural site in Greece and in their own way as spectacular as the caldera of Santorini. The Paleolithic and Neolithic artifacts found here, many of which are in display in the museum, mean that the caves were one of the earliest inhabited places in Greece. Located at the top of the Mani between the town of Pirgos Dirou and Areopolis the entrance is a few meters above the sea and a beautiful stone beach.”

“The Polylimnio Waterfalls can be found at the Polylimnio Gorge in Messenia which is a region in the Peloponnese outside of the city of Kalamata. In Greek, polylimnio translates to many lakes. That’s what you’ll discover. There are 15 little “hidden” fresh water lakes. At many of them, gorgeous waterfalls drop into stunning aqua blue waters. Only after you hike and clamber your way around a tree lined mountain path do you start to see these incredible lakes. The lake’s fresh, clear cold mountain water was extremely refreshing after the hike – the perfect reward. For the more adventurous, diving into the water would be a great option. The path is about three kilometers long. The names of the lakes you’ll encounter are considered quite interesting. A few include Mavrolimna (black lake), Tou Tucherou (of the lucky one), Tou Italou (of the Italian). Kadi Lake features the biggest waterfalls that drop from a height of 25 meters.”

“A castle with a rich history on a rocky hill at the NW side of the city of Kalamata. An ancient acropolis existed on the hill before the Trojan war, and later a Byzantine fortress, but the ruins we observe today are the remains of the castle that was (re)built there in the beginning of the 13th century, during the Frankish occupation. In the 6th century AD., a church was built in the castle devoted to Virgin Mary. An icon of Virgin Mary in the church became famous as 'Kalomata' (meaning 'beautiful eyes'). This later evolved to 'Kalamata' which became the name of the church, the castle and the city.”

“The idea of building a canal through the Isthmus of Corinth (which connects the Peloponnese to the rest of Greece) was conceived by the tyrant Periander in the sixth century BC. However, it was only completed during the period 1882-1893, after modern Greece gained independence. Involving an excavation up to 80 meters in depth, the canal is 6.3 kilometers long, 23 meters wide, and eight meters deep, and can take vessels of up to 10,000 tons. ”
