“Housed in the spectacular Cuban Baroque Palacio de los Capitanes, the Museo de la Ciudad unveils Havana's fascinating history. You can explore the Hall of Heroic Cuba for an impressive display of objects from the revolution. Art history buffs will want to visit the Espada Cemetery Room to view the tomb of famous French artist Vermay. In the Throne Room stands a sumptuous chair that was built for the visit of a Spanish monarch, and never used. But perhaps the highlight of the museum is the Salon de los Espejos. Adorned with beautiful 19th-century mirrors, this room was where the official end of Spanish rule was proclaimed in 1899.”

“Even without any artifact to display, the Museum of the City of Havana would remain an unmissable visit, courtesy of the opulent Palace in which it resides. The Palace of the Captains General is the most important building of the Plaza de Armas and one of the most representative works of baroque architecture in Latin America. It dates from the 1770s and is a manual of Cuban Baroque architecture, carved in rock extracted from the nearby San Lázaro quarries. Occupying the entire west side of the plaza, the palace stands on the site of the demolished Parroquia Mayor, the first church in Havana.”

“Address: Paseo de Marti y Avda del Puerto, Habana Vieja. Description: La Punta was designed by the Italian military engineer Bautista Antonelli and built between 1589 and 1600. It underwent comprehensive repairs after the British shelled it during their successful 1762 Havana raid. During the colonial era a chain was stretched 250m to the castle of El Morro every night to close the harbor mouth to shipping. The castle's museum is really just a few information boards chronicling its history but there are good views from the battlements where you can also admire the huge Parrott cannons dating from the mid-19th century.”

“ The National Museum, was inaugurated on April 28, 1913, as National Museum of the Republic, worked until the mid-twentieth century as an encyclopedic museum, specializing as an institution dedicated to the History of Art after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. Its artistic heritage, composed of more than 45,000 pieces, is considered one of the most important in Latin America and the Caribbean. Together with the largest collection of Cuban art in the world, it conserves pieces from the most important European schools, an important heritage of the continent. The museum also has important pieces of ancient art, including collections from Greece, Rome and Egypt.”

“THE PLAZA de San Francisco Asís, named after the convent next to it, used to serve as a stockyard for vital goods arriving by ships from the harbor. Residences of the Captain Generals were built around the plaza. The Square was once the most vital and busy commercial district in Havana, with locals buying and selling a variety of goods. One of its architectural beauties is the domed Lonja del Comercio building, a former commodities market erected in 1909. It was restored in 1996 to provide office space for foreign companies with joint ventures in Cuba. Lonja del Comercio’s dome is best viewed from inside.”
