“Tasik Kenyir or Kenyir Lake is an artificial lake located in Hulu Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia created in 1985 by the damming of the Kenyir River. The lake provides water to the Sultan Mahmud Power Station. It is the largest man-made lake in South East Asia with an area of 260,000 hectares. Kenyir Lake is also home to numerous species of freshwater fishes and exotic wildlife. With a water catchment area of 38,000 hectares, the lake is naturally a haven for freshwater fish. A recent study revealed that there are some 300 species of freshwater fish dwelling in the lake. The presence of dead trees around the lake serves as a perfect breeding ground for these fishes. Algae growing on dead trees and branches serve as the main form of sustenance for the fishes. From studies and observations conducted by the Department of Fisheries, species such as the big Lampam Sungai (barboides), Kelah (Malayan mahseer or Tor tambroides), Toman (snakehead), Kawan (Friendly Barb), Kalui (Giant Gouramy) and Kelisa (green arowana) are found in waters and around dead trees. The jungles surrounding Kenyir Lake are home to some endangered species, such as Asian elephants and Malaysian tigers.”

“Kenyir Elephant Conservation Village (KECV) is a new attraction in the Lake Kenyir area of Terengganu. It was built in 2012 on a 256 hectare site of which 90% has been left in its natural forest state in order to provide a home for the elephant orphans who live here. The main aim of KECV is to provide a sanctuary for rescued elephants whose life in the wild in Malaysia is threatened by habitat loss and ivory poaching. Creating a tourist attraction and increasing employment for local people are secondary goals. here are currently 13 elephants at KECV. The youngest two, both females, are just 2 years old while the Grandma of the herd, named Teh, is 32. Activities include: Elephant Rides Elephant Bathing (they can take baths up to 7 times a day) Take your photo with elephants Feed the elephants Elephants Education Show Enjoy the canopy walk amid the tree tops and across the river Treehouse Do not forget that elephants can be dangerous. Even with the most professionally run parks and the best trained mahouts, accidents have been known to happen in similar elephant shows around the world. ”

“he most powerful and popular waterfall of Tasik Kenyir. Can be crowded because almost all tour packages will include it in their program. Access from a jetty via a short trail, but most boats land where the river flows into the lake, from where it is a short scramble to the multi-tiered fall. There is a suspension bridge with a good view of the falls and als an observation tower. Upstream of the top fall there is a campsite, but the walkway is broken.”
