National Park
“This national Park is a must see while here on Maui. It’s about an hour drive from our cottage a lot of people like to reserve a spot for viewing the sunrise. But I don’t find that totally necessary going there anytime of day is beautiful and you don’t have to make a reservation to go for the afternoon or sunset. You can hit up the lavender farm while you’re up there as well.”

“WAIMEA BAY AND VALLEY TRAIL My most favorite Beach because I love the sandy beaches and shore line the best. There are lots of different choices on where to spread your beach towel or blanket or chair. Many times I stay down towards The Rock for live entertainment:) Waimea Valley has a trail and a farmers market and beautiful and stunning peacocks. The old historic Sts. Peter & Paul Mission is up on the hill. ”

Scenic Lookout
“Take a pleasant self-guided walk through lush tropical vegetation to scenic vista points overlooking the cascading Kahuna Falls and the free-falling Akaka Falls, which plunges 442 feet. Stop to pet the goats on the way there at Honomu Goat Dairy.”

Historic Site
“Get a glimpse into pre-contact Hawaii. A beautiful setting where you can leave the modern world behind and imagine a time when Native Hawaiians lived untouched by the modern world. It is an old “sanctuary” where people could come to be spared from punishment. The bay nearby is home to turtles and a large variety of tropical fish.”

“This quaint ranch-style town might surprise you. While most people think of beaches in Hawaii, Waimea is a lush, often wet, mountainous ranching town nestled between the slopes of Kohala and Mauna Kea. Parker Ranch Museum will shed some light on the unique ranching history of Hawaii.”

Surf Spot
“Unreal! We saw surfers rocking 40' waves! Amazing. DO NOT TRY TO SWIM HERE UNLESS YOU ARE INSANE OR A PROFESSIONAL! NO KIDS SHOULD BE ANYWHERE NEAR THIS WATER WITHOUT A TIGHT LEASH. THE RIPTIDE PULL GROWN MEN FROM THEIR FEET. Go to Turtle Bay just up the street for a swimming and family fun.”

Beach
“A bit of a tourist trap, but mostly because you can consistently see turtles and an abundance of fish. I highly recommend this place to learn how to surf. There are a handful of surf lesson companies that operate out of the beach park, and you can easily inquire about a surf lesson while at the beach. Please use reef safe sunscreen.”

Surf Spot
“Less than a mile from Carlsmith is the majestic Richardson Beach Park, a black sand gem with stunning views of Hilo Bay, lots of space to lounge in the sun or picnic under the trees, and some of the best snorkeling on the east side of the Big Island. Like Carlsmith, this water is also fed by cool springs so bring a rash guard or long-sleeved shirt to full enjoy the delights this beautiful beach has to offer! Easy access to the water from two points with handrails. There are also toilets, showers and changing rooms on-site. Parking can get tricky when it’s busy so get there early!”

Trail
“Off of Pahoa-Pohoiki Road, and just outside of Pahoa Town is the strange and fascinating Lava Trees State Park. Here you can take the 0.7-mile loop trail in this 17-acre State Monument to view the unusual lava molds of tree trunks, created when a lava flow swept through the area in the 1790, coating the trunks of indigenous ohia trees and leaving tall lava molds in its wake. An easy and accessible walk, this is a wonderful way to see the work of Pele (the goddess of fire) and her amazing sculpture garden. Restrooms, clean water and and picnic tables on-site.”
