“The Kreeger Museum, a private, non-profit art museum and the former residence of David and Carmen Kreeger, rests on five acres of sculpture-filled gardens and is surrounded by tranquil woods. Designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson, it is among the few examples of his work in DC. The Kreeger's focus on 19th and 20th century paintings is evidenced by works of Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Cezanne, Chagall, Miro, and Stella. Also included in the permanent collection are works of prominent Washington artists and outstanding examples of traditional African and Asian art. Tuesdays to Saturdays: 10 am to 4 pm Closed Sundays and Mondays. Suggested Donation: $10”

“ No history buff’s trip to D.C. is complete without a visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Home to our first president and his wife Martha, this expansive eighteenth-century estate is remarkable preserved. On what is still an impressive amount of land, you’ll find their stylishly appointed home, lovely gardens and grounds, and several historic outbuildings like a distillery and gristmill. It’s all been carefully preserved, and in some cases extensively restored, and it remains a fascinating look into the way wealthy Americans lived in the period. While this attraction is comprised of a few distinct buildings and does require some outside time, you’ll be able to spend the bulk of your experience in these lovely historic venues to avoid the rain.”

“Gunston Hall Plantation was the home of George Mason, a senior statesman and author of Virginia's Declaration of Rights. I toured Gunston Hall on a beautiful fall day and had a wonderful time. I was the only person there for an afternoon tour, so I got a private tour. The guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and was able to answer all my questions. In addition to the main house (much of which was original), there were many outbuildings on the grounds which were fun to explore.”

“It is small but packed with information. Displayed everyday items from the area and era. Docent was welcoming and helpful. Quite a collection of stuff about the town of Occoquan, and some real oddities. Take you about 5 - 15 minutes, so you can combine this visit with the newly opened park next door or with some shopping.”

“Get those demon carbs out of your body and run up all 75 of the super-steep infamous Exorcist steps at the corner of 36th and Prospect streets. The steps had their moment of fame as the spot where Father Karras tumbled to his demise in the in the cult horror classic The Exorcist. Locals flock to the steps to get their sweat on, so you’ll be in good company.”
