Garden
“This is a must-see and it is literally less than 2 miles from your stay. Your host attended her first family wedding there in 1980. Many brides and grooms have said "I do" under the gazebo. Many more have had senior pictures, band pictures, family pictures in front of the backdrop of this beautiful treasure. If you get a chance check it out, you won't be disappointed! Copied from the website: The Sarah P. Duke Gardens consist of approximately 55 acres of landscaped and wooded areas at Duke University. There are 5 miles of allées, walks, and pathways throughout the gardens.”

Concert Hall
“We have a great performing arts center where Broadway performances, concerts and comedy shows are held. The most memorable performance your host attended was just the past December. White Christmas was my favorite! It was especially nice because our son gave us great seats to this event. My other "favorite" was Phantom of the Opera, the beautiful music from this performance has stuck with me.”

Park
“Beautiful gem of a State Park. Walking trails, some short and more trafficked, some narrow and quiet. River with rapids, wading areas, and a few picnic areas. ”

Baseball Stadium
“We have our own minor-league baseball team! The triple-A league team has brought plenty of excitement to our city for every wide-eyed kid and adult alike. Who doesn't love a baseball game? America's greatest past-time! The sights, sounds and smells make it worth the trip! Oh, I can't forget to tell you that the movie Bull Durham starring Kevin Costner was about our Durham baseball team and filmed in our great city. But you'll have to check out the original digs on 428 Morris St in Downtown Durham. The minor-league team played there from 1926 - 1994 until they moved their current location on Blackwell St. The "old" ballpark is affectionately known as "The DAP" for Durham Athletic Park and the "new" park is know as the "The D-BAP", where you can see the mechanical snorting bull made famous in the movie.”

Science Museum
“The jewel of Durham for children of all ages. This place has everything. Two stories of inside play and learning areas for different ages and tons of outdoor things: A butterfly house and insectarium, Into the Mist (great for hot days), Earth Moves (opened 2019, basically replicates the best part of the beach), remote control sailboats, dinosaur trail, play ground and sandbox, brown bears, lemurs, and wolves, a train ($3 to ride), giant amazing tree houses connected by swinging bridges and slides, and a little wading creek. Special area inside for children 5 and under, indoor space for babies as well.”

“Cocoa cinnamon is THE spot for any “work from home” person or student. Their coffee never disappoints and they usually offer pastries from local bakeries as well. If you care to venture into historic Lakewood, the Cocoa Cinnamon location there offers one of a kind churros.”

Brewery

“An original in every sense of the word. One of the earliest breweries on the Durham scene, it's been a neighborhood staple since 2010. You can't go wrong with any of their award winning beers but I'm currently loving the Durham 150.”

Shopping Mall
“If you are willing to venture a little further, Southpoint is a very popular shopping venue for our area. It blends the traditional mall (like Crabtree) with a street lined shopping experience as well. There are many restaurants, shops, theaters, and even an IMAX. ”

“In the evening, head to Mateo Bar de Tapas, housed in the old Book Exchange building in the heart of downtown. It mixes traditional Spanish recipes with ingredients from the South. The food is accompanied by an impressive wine list and the largest range of sherries in the country.”
