Synagogue
“Opened in 1859, Budapest’s Great Synagogue is Europe’s largest place of Jewish worship (and the second biggest in the world). The stunning architecture and interior décor is worth the trip alone, but a visit to the Great Synagogue (aka Tabakgasse Synagogue) also aims to guide visitors through the history of Jews in Hungary. Inside you’ll find the Hungarian Jewish Museum & Archives, as well as the Holocaust Tree of Life Memorial.”

“The magnificent castle of Emperor Maximilan is one of the major sights. It used to be an Imperial residence until the end of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and the furniture is still original. The park surrounding the castle used to be one of the most magnificent parks, it is not in the best conditions, now, but still nice for a stroll around and the entrance to the park is free. The view from the castle and also the park is really great. In summer you can go there even by boat and the view from the sea is one of my personal highlights.”

“The Citadel, which sits atop Gellert Hill, was constructed by the Hapsburgs following the failed Hungarian War of Independence. It was thought that its prime strategic position would make it easy to control both Buda and Pest, should any future uprisings occur. Troops were stationed at the Citadel until 1897. Soviet forces once again used the fortress to control the city during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, and tanks which were situated there fired down on the city. The Citadel now houses a restaurant, a hotel and a museum.”

Scenic Lookout
“Although the Fisherman’s Bastion looks like a medieval monument, it was actually built in the early 20th century in a neo-Gothic style, specifically to act as a panoramic viewing platform across the Danube, Margaret Island and Pest. It is named after the Guild of Fishermen, which was responsible for defending that stretch of the city walls during the Middle Ages. The seven towers of the Bastion represent the seven Magyar tribes that helped to settle the Magyar people in the Carpathian Basin. Come at sunset to see a particularly beautiful view of the city.”

“Tkalčićeva Street is Zagreb main hub for cafes, restaurants and casual nightlife. Also known as Tkalča (Tkalcha), it features dozens of places where you will find something to your liking. Tkalčićeva is filled with life. Numerous boutiques, traditional shops, restaurants, cafes and outdoor events will fill your day. Once it was a stream that divided two oldest Zagreb settlements, Gradec and Kaptol. Because of contamination by all the shops, the stream was diverted. In the period 1899 to 1941, almost every house in Tkalčićeva street was a brothel. or this reason, Zagreb was the first city in Europe with the proper red light district. ”

Island
““The most colorful island of the lagoon” If you visit Venice for more than one day, I highly suggest a visit to Burano, a lovely island in the Venetian Lagoon, about 40 minutes on a waterbus from Venice. The Burano Island is mostly famous for its brightly colored houses lined with the canals, which create a sort of urban rainbow. According to the legend, the island's fishermen were the first to color their houses, so they could see them while they were out fishing. True or not, today Burano boasts a unique cheery atmosphere: a sort of dreamland, with flower boxes sitting on the windowsills and gondolas passing along the canals… The island is also famous for its artisan lace production: in the many craft shops that dot the streets you will have the opportunity to admire the master artisans at work, and to buy lace products of the highest quality. Also, among the Burano’s attractions, there's the Lace Museum and a 15th century leaning tower, which is the bell tower of the San Martino church. The colorful island of Burano is the perfect place for a half-day excursion, to discover Venice’s craft tradition and breathe the peacefulness and prettiness of this fisherman’s town.”

Capitol Building
“The Hungarian Parliament Building, which was designed and built in the Gothic Revival style, is one of the largest buildings in Hungary, and is home to hundreds of parliamentary offices. Although the impressive building looks fantastic from every angle, to see the whole building in its full glory, it is worth viewing it from the other side of the Danube. Tours of certain areas of the building are available daily, and run in different languages. You will need identification to get in, and your bag may be searched on entry.”

Historic Site
“The most famous and important monument, the starting and ending point of every sightseeing tour is the Amphitheater, popularly called the Arena of Pula, which was once the site of gladiator fights. It was built in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the magnificent Colosseum in Rome. The ground plan is elliptical, the longer axis measuring about 130 m and the shorter one about 100 m. Gladiator fights took place in the central flat area called the arena, while the spectators could sit on the stone tiers or stand in the gallery. It is believed that the Amphitheater could seat about 20,000 spectators. Local limestone was used for its construction. In the Middle Ages it was the site of knights tournaments and fairs. Today, it is the venue for many different events – Pula Film Festival, various concerts, opera, ballet, sports competitions… since its capacity is about 5000 spectators. Every week during the summer months, the Arena hosts gladiator fights as part of the historical and entertainment spectacle “Spectacvla Antiqva”. The underground passages, once used by the gladiators, nowadays host a regular exhibition of viticulture and olive growing in Istria in ancient times. The exhibits include reconstructions of machines once used for the production of olive oil and wine (mills, presses, vessels) and amphorae used for storing and transporting olive oil and wine. The Amphitheater is situated outside the old city walls because of its size and geographical configuration. The road that leads to the center was constructed during Emperor Vespasian, after whom it was named – Via Flavia. Even today it represents one of the main city roads.”

Church
“The largest church in Budapest, which can hold up to 8,500 people and is one of Hungary’s most iconic structures. The mummified right hand of the patron saint of the church and first king of Hungary, St Stephen, is kept in a glass case to the left of the main altar. And if that doesn’t turn you on, just check out all that monumental neoclassical architecture. The Basilica’s star feature is the 96-metre-high dome, lined on the inside with ornate religious reliefs. Once you’ve had a little wander, why not take in the impressive views from the cupola?”

Church
“The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is an imposing gothic church built on the site where the ancient Cathedral of Florence stood, the Church of Santa Reparata, whose remains are visible in the crypt. Visiting the Cathedral is free! The entrance to the Cathedral is free and for this reason, there are long queues to enter. Don’t worry, usually, the line moves quite fast. The number of visitors inside the Cathedral is limited mainly because of the noise that comes to be created in this place of religious worship; recently (from July 16, 2012) to improve the situation, the directors of the Duomo decided to oblige groups of more than 4 people to rent radios or audio guides (cost from 2 up to 2.50 euros per person) in order to reduce the noise of visitors and increase the number of persons allowed in every single moment. ”

Library
“Whether or not the State Hall of the Austrian National Library is an off the beaten path attraction is debatable, seeing as it is probably the most famous library hall in the whole world. The previous court library of the Habsburgs, decorated in a lavishing baroque style, is 20 metres high and 80 metres long, and houses over 200,000 volumes. To make it even more majestic are the central 30 metres high oval dome, allegorical frescoes, and four Venetian globes each more than one meter in diameter. It does not matter if you are a book and art lover or not, a visit to this landmark should be on your list of things to do in Vienna during your next visit.”
