“Pistol River State Park is set in the dunes of the southern Oregon coast. The river supposedly got its name when a militia soldier lost his pistol in the river during the infamous Rogue River Indian War. In March of 1856, a decisive battle was fought here. The dunes and the river system that feeds them are what make this area unique. During the spring and summer months, the dunes actually grow. The river has changed its course numerous times in recent history and pothole ponds attract waterfowl and shorebirds making this is an excellent birding locale. Ocean windsurfing is so good here it has become the location for several national championship. Great place to take the dogs. ”

“There is a Myrtle Walk trail along the river here which connects to a Redwoods hike across the road. This is a day use and overnight camping area. Only 7 miles past Chetco Haven, up the river. Also a great swimming hole in the warmer months. ”

“A deep forest of Sitka spruce covers most of the park and a 1.5 mile walking trail takes you out to the lower levels of the cape. If you're lucky, the trail will give you a chance to enjoy awe-inspiring views of the gray whales on their bi-annual migrations. ”

“In the summer this can be a very windy place. It is a popular lake for kite surfing and windsurfing in the summer. It is worth the walk from the lake to the beach. It is loose sand. Or take a walk from the lake along a river to the mouth Floras Creek. If you are in this area, also also recommend you visit the visitor center at Storm Ranch at New River managed by the BLM, Langlois Market for yummy food (famous hot dogs), Dragonfly Nursery, or Cape Blanco Lighthouse. ”
