Boligen
Cozy cottage behind main house, complete kitchen and bath, loft bedroom. Kitchen utensils, ironing board, iron, ipod docking station, wifi, but no TV. Located in a great Berkeley neighborhood with lots of restaurants and shopping within walking distance. A bus to the City is a block and a half away, and BART is an easy walk. My property backs on to an East Bay Municipal Water District reservoir, so even though it is in the heart of the city with two main arteries near by, it is quiet. College Ave. is our nearby shopping street; it runs from the University to the north, down to Broadway to the south and on it you can find just about everything you need and much of what you might want.

Her skal du være

Berkeley, Californien, USA

College Avenue is a great street with all kinds of shopping and eating possibilities. It runs from the University to Broadway in Oakland. The shopping areas are interspersed with blocks of housing. Below is by no means an exhaustive list, but rather encouragement to stroll down the Avenue.

Buying food:
- Our neighborhood grocery store is Star Market. It has almost everything you might need: butcher, fresh vegetables, wine, fresh bread, treats, and standard grocery items.
Directions: Turn left out of the driveway; turn left at the corner, Webster St.; walk one block to Claremont Ave (the busy street) and turn right; Star is a block and a half down on the right.

- If you keep walking on Claremont all the way to College (about 5 blocks), you will come to Safeway. Across the street from Safeway is a very good vegetable market (Yasai), a great (but expensive) flower stall, a hip new bar, a nice wine store with a range of prices, another great butcher store, a delicious bakery (wonderful Morning Buns), a candy/toy store, and a Peet’s Coffee. The Safeway is new and big, but if you continue south on College, you will come to Trader Joe's.

- There is also a market a few doors west of College on Ashby Ave. It does not have a butcher, but you can get necessities.

- Whole Foods is further west on Ashby at Telegraph Avenue and Ashby.

- The queen of markets is Berkeley Bowl. You will probably need a car unless you are a very sturdy walker. It is at Shattuck and Russell; go straight west (toward the water) on Ashby to Shattuck and turn right on Shattuck; it is two blocks north on Shattuck. The store is renowned particularly for its fruits and vegetables, many of which you will never have heard of, although it also has an excellent butcher and an excellent fish section.

Restaurants:
What kind of food do you want? There is virtually everything you could want on College.

Between Russell St. and Webster St., the closest business district, you will find Szechuan Chinese, Italian delicatessen, general American, Mediterranean, Indian, Mexican taqueria, Chinese, doughnut shop, 3 coffee shops with lighter fare, and a Sicilian restaurant. And a shop on Ashby that sells chocolate, including Mexican hot chocolate.

Two of my favorites are the Elmwood Café on the corner of Russell and College, and the Sicilian restaurant on College at just about Webster.
The Elmwood Café opens about 7 am, has good coffee, light breakfasts (very good oatmeal), great pastry and nice light lunches. It used to be a drugstore with a fountain, and they have kept the counter. It’s a pleasant place to sit and watch the neighborhood go by.
The Trattoria Siciliana is not cheap – check the menu in the window – but the food is excellent. Best to make a reservation, and note that they do not accept credit cards, only cash.
If you just want to grab a burrito, Gordo’s is pretty good, or you can try Cuppa Tea across the street for some lighter meals.
Nabolom Bakery, across the street from the 7-11 on Russell, makes a very good cheese Danish for your morning pleasure and excellent pizza (by the slice, or half-baked to take home, or full baked).
If you keep walking south on College, you will come to the Claremont and College section of the Safeway et. al. There is good Japanese food at Mitama (the corner of College and Alcatraz), very good California cuisine at the Wood Tavern (mid-block between Alcatraz and 63rd), and a very good noodle restaurant right at the west corner of College and Claremont. Cole’s Coffee has a drip coffee and an excellent Mexican hot chocolate (it’s right across from the Yasai vegetable market).
If you want craft beer, try the bar next to the Wood Tavern; if you can be happy with a Pabst Blue Ribbon, try the Undergraduate – a small, not remotely fancy bar across the street from Safeway on Claremont. If you want to go fancy, walk up to the Claremont Hotel (turn right at end of driveway, walk to Ashby at the end of the block, turn right and walk up Ashby – you can see it’s white towers). The view is very nice.

Drugstore:

- The closest drug store is Chimes, across from Safeway, but there is a Walgreen's across from Berkeley Bowl on Shattuck. The new Safeway also has a pharmacy.

Bookstores:

Mrs. Dalloway’s between College and Russell is a good bookstore with a children’s section. The toy store across the street from Mrs. Dalloway’s, Sweet Dreams, also has a good selection of children’s books.

Further south on College, within walking distance if you are a walker, is Diesel Books, another fine bookstore. To get there you will pass another area with many fine food options – Zachary’s pizza, right across from Trader Joe’s, Market Hall, right across from the BART station, with a vegetable store, bakery, coffee shop, and wonderful Italian deli, Cactus Taqueria with great burritos, the Rockridge Café with good burgers and good breakfast, among others. If you make it almost to Broadway, you will hit Soi Four, a great Thai restaurant.

This list just begins to scratch the surface of the offerings in the immediate area. If you cast your net just a little wider, you will be in the Temescal area with Mexican food as you have never tasted it at Dona Tomas, or tapas at Barlatta’s, or unusual pizza at Piazolo, or ordinary good pizza at Lane Splitter, or a terrific chicken sandwich at Bakesale Betty’s. Or if you go to the north side of Berkeley, the other side of campus, you will find the best pizza in the world at Cheese Board, a collective which also has a cheese store, or, the most famous Berkeley dining, Chez Panisse, and another great Thai restaurant, Cha’am.
